I'm rather liking Xwarq's "Roman Caliphate" idea, personally, but I'll choose another challenge if there's significant support for it.

Speaking of which, guess who just won MoF 14: THE KING IS DEAD!? That's right...

Xwarq

With his map of the Union of Socialist Ottoman Republics, combining interesting alternate historical concepts with great quality map making. Congratulations, Xwarq! :)

I'll second this. It's an interesting idea, a bit narrower in scope, but with plenty of potential.

I have a few ideas.

One Nation Under God
-A nation that is secular in OTL turns Theocratic either through peaceful means or through a bloody revolution.

All Power To The Soviets
-USSR (and allies) win the Cold War. (It could be any nation that lost. USA, Nazi Germany, etc)

Long Live the King
-Absolute monarchies still around (or remain in power for a longer period of time)

Best Buds / Yanks and Franks - The Quebec Act is never passed. Britain angers both Quebecois and the people of the Thirteen Colonies. As a result, both Quebec and the United States revolt at the same time. The United States and Quebec soon become allies. Create a map showing the territorial expansion of Quebec and the United States.

That's a bit clichéd is it not? and rather specific. Besides, all you can really do is give Quebec Canada.

Why Do They Hate Our Freedom?: Make a map depicting some part of a world where a stable, democratic, Islamic/secular Middle East wages unpopular wars of occupation in a chaotic, divided, Christian-fundamentalist-plagued North America.

11:59 - Create a map of the day before Nuclear Armageddon.

I'd go with this, if it has sufficient support and if I can specify no ASB or future history maps.

I still want this one, though

My only problem with that one is that it's a bit too general. Something more specific like "A map showing the spread of an AH Abrahmic sect" or "A map showing the spread of an AH ideology post 1700" would be better.

Oh, and I've made a couple of changes to the current map challenge. Firstly, the idea that the map must be after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 has been thrown out the window, since Islam was founded in 610 (or thereabouts). Also, sorry tormsen, but no ASB or future history maps are allowed.

:( It would have been nice to know that before I made the thing.

Can't it be "Spread of Islam on a world where geography inexplicably stagnates with Strabo"?

ASB or future history maps are allowed.
One could argue for ages on whether a particular premise is 'ASB' or just 'quite unexpected/totally unpredictable'. Many OTL events have fallen into the latter category, no doubt in an alternate universe anyone proposing those events in an alternate history forum would be pooh-poohed (or worse) by the 'experts'.

I'm not looking for a discussion on the definition of 'ASB', which anyway would reflect personal views, more like pondering about the incidence of anal retentive syndrome and lack of whimsy.

BTW, is the map challenge like the flag challenge, where the winner sets the next challenge?

Well, if whether a map is ASB or not is in doubt then I'd tend towards leniency and allow it. I'd rather that Map of the Fortnight was about making good map than writing good history.

Oh goodness me, no. I (or whoever happens to be running the contest) set the challenges. The challenges themselves are chosen from amongst the proposals posted in this thread, with a tendency towards those with more popular support. I try to announce the challenge I'm planning to use next beforehand, to see whether there's any great opposition to it, or whether another suggestion is more popular.

I see.

Cartography trumps the story?

I think it's more challenging and more fun to let the winner set the next challenge.

Well, I consider this a cartography competition, not a story competition, so yes.

I think it's more challenging and more fun to let the winner set the next challenge.

There are a number of problems that could arise from that, but the main problem I have with it is that it only draws on the creativity of one person and that it doesn't necessarily take the opinions of the general populous into consideration.

I hope you specify in future when no fantasy maps are allowed. Though I mentioned my maps was probably classified as ASB, on further thought I think it's more of a 'historical fantasy' genre map. I think that is a slightly different beast.

Sorry about that, I really should have specified straight away that ASB maps weren't allowed.
