  1. To What Extent is the “Competition Breeds Innovation” Argument True?

It depends on mind set as well. If you think everything is the God(s) will then you may just keep doing the same thing rather than experiment. Its one of the reasons given for the change in Europe during the late Medieval, the Protestant's challenging of everything brought about the use of...
  2. Into the Fire - the "Minor" nations of WW2 strike back

More accurate to say they are only better than HE in certain situations. If you need to take a bridge intact or dealing with a complex bunker system, they might have a role. Defoliants might again work in a limited set of circumstances. Personally I'd not touch either with a barge pole but WW2...
  3. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

At this point Soviet unit titles were exaggerated, Divisions were actually equivalent to German Brigades, Tank Corps to Divisions etc. Even with that they were often chronically understrength
  4. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

And that's the key bit, the German plan of how to get oil back to Germany was pretty much "the soviets will gift us the wells/train engines/rolling stock/lines etc undamaged and magically there will be no impact the rest of our logistic capacity ". Even if they get the fields, they will be of no...
  5. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Except that's not exactly what happened in OTL, merchant ships deemed armed did get stopped. Both Türkiye and Germany were also aware the US was/is not a signatory to the convention and Türkiye was worried the US might try and force a change to the rules post war.
  6. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Short answer no, if Türkiye lets them use the straits for military purposes, its declaring war on the allies. Not a sane option in 1942 even in OTL, let alone ITTL with a better allied performance.
  7. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

OK , not very good articles to quote, they seem to have made a conclusion and then worked backwards to justify it. First, most of the supply motor transport in North Africa was not actually German, it was Italian or captured. ITTL most will have been lost/never taken. Second, Luftwaffe supply...
  8. Malaya What If

And how do they supply? The isthmus is too big for the two forces to have a hope of joining up before the suicide blocking force gets steam rolled.
  9. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

No, No, No. The issue is not yet the amount of oil, its getting that oil to the front, so having a bit more makes no difference. The Germans had to chose between sending fuel , ammo, supplies and men, they just did not have the logistics to send all they needed of each.
  10. Malaya What If

They did train for it and it was first attested in WW1, however it does not seem to be very high chance. From Youtube
  11. How "should" WWII in 1940 have gone?

And how exactly are these Axis Wundertruppen meant to get to North Africa if they are facing the combined British and French Navy's backed by airbases in Tunisia as well as Egypt? I'm sorry but if France fights on from Africa , the chances are high North Africa is over very quickly due to Axis...
  12. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Not exactly, the 75mm was better with HE and the US Generals did not think they needed a better AT tank at the cost of that extra HE capability. They were told they needed the 76 but decided they knew better, quickly found out they were wrong. Hence the yelling.
  13. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Then they met Panthers and Tigers and started Yelling.
  14. Military tactics ( that were never developed or employed )

AI is not an I win button in all circumstances, gun laying is one of them ( AI is good at pattern matching not intercept geometry ). In any case the idea is not to give your position away which means no active sensors. Its one of the problems of a lot of 5th Generation fighters also have, to...
  15. Why do you think there is more interest in the Tudors than the Stuarts among the general public?

And going backwards we have Edward the Confessor who was half Norman ( hence the basis for Williams claim ) , then we have the Danish Kings so we get to Edmund Ironside and run out of the historical record giving a reliable linage for both parents.
  16. A Better Rifle at Halloween

Half right, if they are going into urban combat then some non officers could be carrying a revolver, shotgun or some other item of what became known as trench stores instead of a rifle. Swords, for infantry, different for Cavalry as everyone had one, had already been shown to be a bullet magnet...
  17. Darkness before Dawn - Purple Phoenix 1416

Map is good but one actually showing where Glarentza is might have been a bit better. Seems to be described as the Westernmost point so somewhere near where the map says Chelonatas Pr?
  18. Into the Fire - the "Minor" nations of WW2 strike back

Shock of the hit on many occasions caused secondary effects that ended up with stuff to go boom. Lots of accounts of torpedoed tankers for instance that suffered secondary explosions that caused fires ( just needed a short for instance in the right place).
  19. YF-23 chosen by Navy

Simple answer no , just like the F-15 and F-16, cheap(er) is still needed especially as both YF's are more fighter than attack options.
  20. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

In a naval battle to be honest, no one cares about anything above 10000 feet ( apart from recon birds ) as all the strike aircraft will be lower. The British will want to strike at night and hide during the day so the Zero is a non factor in regard to strikes on the IJN carriers.
