  1. WI: Kosygin succeeds Khrushchev?

Kosygin liked reform, and being one of the most liberal members of the Politburo, introduced it (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1965_Soviet_economic_reform) in 1965. So with a reformer at the helm, I agree that you'd likely see less economic stagnation. But you'd still see the same level of...
  2. WI: Kosygin succeeds Khrushchev?

Let's say that Alexei Kosygin succeeds Nikita Khrushchev as General Secretary in the same way that Leonid Brezhnev did. What would Kosygin do differently and how would this affect the Soviet Union and the rest of the world?
  3. Possible PODs Involving FDR

There's obviously the big one, which is FDR's assassination in 1932. Another one is FDR not contracting polio, which would greatly change his later life.
  4. And To Think It Might Have Happened: A Ukraine War Timeline

What's going on with Lithuania? I thought that they would've been attacked in the initial wave along with Estonia and Latvia.
  5. The Fighting Illini - P&S: Illinois

Chapter XXVII April Showers April 1984 As the war with Carbondale ended, the real work began. Governor Jim Thompson knew that the crop fields of Illinois could provide the state with enough food to survive the next winter, but the crops would have to be planted now. Therefore, a directive...

  7. The Fighting Illini - P&S: Illinois

  10. No More Medals: A Soviet Timeline

Indeed it is, and it was precisely the reason why Gerboise Verte was detonated with such haste IOTL; the French government feared that the leaders of the Algiers pusch would capture the bomb.
  11. No More Medals: A Soviet Timeline

    V. The French had long been involved in the Algerian War with the intention to keep Algeria as a part of France, but by 1961 it was becoming clear that the French would have to let Algeria go. The Algiers putsch of 1961 is regarded by many historians to be a flashpoint of the war. The putsch...

Restart Good news! I am going to be restarting this TL very soon, and I am planning to have an update out perhaps even later today or tomorrow.
  13. A USSR With Kosygin At The Helm

That seems to be the case. I've heard him called both a conservative and a liberal, so I think we can just split the difference and call him a centrist.
  14. A USSR With Kosygin At The Helm

My understanding is that he was on the liberal side, but barely. My grandfather, who lived in the Soviet Union for 50 years, told me this.
  15. A USSR With Kosygin At The Helm

I see what you mean about party leaders thinking Kirilenko is easy to control, but you still have to get him into the role of General Secretary. You have to surpass Kosygin, who is Premier, and Nikolai Podgorny, who is Head of State (he is the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet)...
  16. A USSR With Kosygin At The Helm

I doubt that Kirilenko would have enough weight of his own to pull to become General Secretary. I think he would have to reach some sort of compromise with someone else in the Party, possibly Kosygin or maybe Mikhail Suslov. Either way, there's simply no way Kirilenko becomes General Secretary...
