If you asked for critique, I would suggest mainly that you either change your labels to a lighter color, or make your background colors all a good deal lighter. Right now, you have dark labels on a slightly-less dark background, which is not ideal for comprehension. The map is all legible, but...

This map is very well made. Great job. I also see you had it break the maps borders which is always brownie points.

Its a fantastic and rich map, but it suffers from some design issues that to my eye make it more inaccessible than it could be. For instance, the many thick lines that suck up a lot of the free space in the map, and how many unnecessary font type / color changes there are. That said, if you took...

I apologize. I will edit my comment and not use that word moving forward. On the topic of good free GIS resources, heres some other ones to keep saved: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/ http://www.projectlinework.org/ Theres also some interesting work by John Nelson at ESRI on replicating...

So theres no way to really copy the look of this sort of terrain without drawing it by hand. Especially because the shaded reliefs I linked to are mostly from the early 20th century, not the 19th. Theres a slight difference in style. If you wanted that 'stippled' look, I'd actually drop it into...

This video is fantastic, I've never seen this. Thank you for sharing that! Yeah, this is all personal preference at the end of the day, when I think of great 19th century maps I personally gravitate towards maps like this: Where the shading is a lot finer and more realistic to later shaded...

wait...its not cheese rivers? Damn I was so psyched. This, this is a good map. This is a great map. The fonts, the textures, the styling. Its all spot on. I just wish there was a shaded relief in it too. It would just add that extra 1 to make it go to 11. BTW for anyone wanting to add...

I'd also recommend setting all your text colors to solid black. That yellow and that lime green are very difficult to read on the white bg. In fact, as a general rule of thumb - very, very rarely does text that is not labels need to be anything besides solid white, or solid black (depending on...

You might hate me, but are there supposed to be 3 'P's in Uppper Louisiana?

A updated version for 1850 of the map I made for @okmangeez timeline: There is no legend or titling here as hopefully the map is generally self-explanatory (in the context of the timeline), but for clarity here, dark blue is states, and light blue is territories.

    Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

This is a great guide, but as a rule of thumb dont ever, ever use checkerboards to fill polygons. Hatching, and sometimes dots, are generally okay but you want to keep your fills as unobtrusive as possible. A good guide is to try every other way of distinguishing that polygon first, and then use...

    Flag Thread IV

Top flag is some 12 year olds first flag. Bottom flag is something that would be on CNN after a new nation was founded in a horrible civil war (continent: up to you). Love the slightly desaturated palette. It just feels like a real flag in a indescribable way.

YES. Or like, a tasty lambert or albers projection for a regional map. My last thought on the firestorm I ignited: Nothing will ever aesthetically beat a top-down custom map, tailored to the particular geographical area. But QBAM and WorldA (I pronounce it World A as like a scream, high-pitched...

This is all my personal opinion obviously, but I find the WorldA format is just very limiting. The most ambitious, well-made WorldA map (of which there are some great ones I have seen here)...still look like WorldA maps. It might be the pixellated style. Just doesnt work for me at all.

This is all a great reason to not use WorldA maps. Honestly I check out mentally whenever I see that familiar pixellated format. Great easy way to make maps but I just dont find cartographic value in them overall.

I should clarify, this is not my lore. I just made the map. I do know if Quebec was called Canada the screams of a million feisty Frenchman would ring out into the frozen night.
