  1. WI China chose to engage in mass exploration/colonization in the 15th century?

Hi, I think the problem is in that, when thinking about a possible Chinese colonialism, we always have as the standard European colonialism. So if the Chinese "do" colonialism, it has to be a variation of the European phenomenon, otherwise it isn't "really" colonialism. So we imagine the...
  2. What if France conquers a Prince-elector

Easy! Just vassalize enough electors, since they'll always vote for you and bang! France is HRE emperor forever... What? My vassal is no longer an elector? EU3 lied to me? Mon dieu...;)
  3. Soviet Fantastic Painting

Love all these paintings! Such humanity in them.
  4. Question about ancient greek colonies

Very interesting! So, if the Phocian Greeks had won the battle of Alalia more decisively, the Greeks would have expanded even more. How far could they go? Perhaps planting colonies beyond the Mediterranean, in the Atlantic coast of Europe?
  5. Question about ancient greek colonies

Yeah, but at some point surely there would have been a reaction against the "encroaching foreigners", or whatnot. And the Greek colonies were everywhere and not just outposts or "chinatowns", but full-fledged cities. There should be more to that story than that.
  6. Question about ancient greek colonies

Hi, I was thinking the other day about how exactly the ancient greek colonies got founded: a bunch of greeks appeared off the coast somewhere in the Med, disembarked, built a city, and we have Neapolis, Massilia, etc...but no fighting? That land belonged to someone, and even in ancient times...
  7. AHC: Limited Nuclear Exchange Post-1980

Hi Phil, The list comes from the 2008 Census. The 304 cities comes from Eric L. Harry's Ark Light, a WWIII novel that Simon Darkshade was commenting on.
  8. AHC: Limited Nuclear Exchange Post-1980

Seems to me that if the Soviets in a "limited" scenario bother to bomb something like Broken Arrow, OK, I don't want to know what a total scenario means. The above list adds up to 87,220,305 people with a direct hit.
  9. AHC: Limited Nuclear Exchange Post-1980

A list of the 304 largest American cities: New York NY 8,363,710 Los Angeles CA 3,833,995 Chicago IL 2,853,114 Houston TX 2,242,193 Phoenix AZ 1,567,924 Philadelphia PA 1,447,395 San Antonio TX 1,351,305 Dallas TX 1,279,910 San Diego CA 1,279,329 San Jose CA 948,279 Detroit MI...
  10. the mughals discover australia

The Spanish, when they discovered America, spend something like three decades struggling in a few outposts in the Caribbean. They returned there instead of forgetting about the place because Columbus found some gold and exotica, and after both were either exhausted or otherwise limited they were...
  11. AHC: Incan Takeover of Cuzco

Apparently it was a close thing. Looking at the siege of Cuzco article in Wiki, it was vicious, desperate, and the Spanish could well have been beaten. Suppose for example that they fail to take the fortress of Sacsaywamán. (I've been there and it is still amazing). Then the Spanish garrison is...
  12. Civilization without writing?

Hi Leo, very interesting. One question, though: complex, abstract religion seems to be possible without writing. For example, the Vedas and early Buddhism were transmitted (and I assume created) by oral tradition up to the 1st century BC (Wiki dixit). How it is possible to affirm that...
  13. Guess the language!

So the language has Romance syntax, and many Germanic words and sounds. A romance country got VERY invaded by the barbarians!
  14. Guess the language!

Definitely the Nicene creed, more or less. A semi translation (in Spanish, sorry): Rhite in aun te, fasser ummenfossin, Creo en ti, padre (fasser) faHtûr tihale i tizerra, hacedor(factor) del cielo y la tierra tümins vispels is invispels; de lo visible y lo invisible isin aun...
  15. Guess the language!

I think it is a modified Nicene creed. That's the POD? And the language is like a Germanified french.
  16. DB challenge: Give away the canals

    Ooopss! Ok, go ahead...!
  17. DB challenge: Give away the canals

...Just to remind you, in OTL the Panama Canal has been under Panamanian control since 2000. And it was so because the Panama Canal treaty was renegotiated in 1977 (if I remember well) by Carter. So the POD is actual reality, in Panama's case. And it was peaceful. Bonus point to reality!
  18. How Plausible is History?

Correct. That's because the probabilities of x change according to whatever happened before, which in itself has another probability. What we're talking about is simple Bayesian probabilities: what is the prob. of x, given a certain previous event y with a probability p(y)? P(X|Y)? So I think...
  19. How Plausible is History?

I agree with Michael B: most history seems implausible, if you stay with at the detail level and don't examine ultimate causes. For example, WWI and WWII, the European colonial expansion, etc., are far from implausible. The particular details are almost random. More interesting are events...
