Una diferente ‘Plus Ultra’ - the Avís-Trastámara Kings of All Spain and the Indies (Updated 11/7)

I love this timeline. One feature I love is how you really consider the distance problem. Spain is so far away their actors are largely independent and have little oversight, sometimes this works out for the crown but usually it creates a headache. Bravo sir, bravo.

You might see the early modern equivalent of a credit union coming from these guilds.

    Prevent the Middle Ages

The nice part of this forum is we can just think aloud and role with it if we want. It's a fun thought experiment if nothing else. Personally, I think the intent is important when discussing a cultural phenomenon. I would argue that the community rules may have macroeconomic trends, or more...

    Prevent the Middle Ages

Fascinating, I totally believe it. I'm just a history and economist enthusiast and that is what I noticed over the years. Do. you have a reason why guilds weren't taking off sooner? If I had to say there weren't enough people to support the level of labor specialization needed, which required...

    Prevent the Middle Ages

Agreed, I would also add you need a level of societal trust to make the institutions that promote growth. A lack of trust in agreements and safety will undo any sort of development due to the risk involved in new ventures. Such trust can only be built over time with seen assurances of safety and...

    Prevent the Middle Ages

Time to break out the Chart TM. Seriously though what we consider antiquity was going to end eventually. The Roman modal of governance of a single city/region acting like a mob boss to large swaths of territory was going to end as populations grew. During its height, it would be more accurate...

Spain was similarly fighting a defensive war that the holy league joined. The rest of Europe might not be a fan of the gains of Spain, but they see the costs, and understand those gains came mostly at the expense of an unsympathetic enemy

Southern Italy is going to see a lot more Spanish settlers and will be an even larger hodgepodge of Mediterranean cultures depending on how the peace is made. I wouldn't be surprised if down the line they don't consider themselves Italian the same way northern Italy does come the age of nationalism

Place In the Sun: What If Italy Joined the Central Powers? (1.0)

The French themselves? If the 20th and 21st century has taught us anything about occupation, is that it's a matter of when it ends not if. We don't even need to look that far from France and Germany. France spent the first half of the 20th century trying to occupy and make the Saarland a french...

Place In the Sun: What If Italy Joined the Central Powers? (1.0)

The European Steel and coal commission was designed around the idea that if you integrate the economies that are necessary for war, war is less likely, and that was done with just Italy, France, Benelux, and West Germany. Yes, France was the big dog there, but it wasn't engulfing the other...

Same reason OTL that Germany wasn't turned into a pastoral nation. Long-term it's almost impossible to do, They can attempt it but here's hoping that the germans are smart enough to go for an EU approach after round two instead

This seems the more accurate take. This kind of excursion will be a "border setter" kind of war where the ottomans may decide Italy isn't worth it in the future if they can't take any foot hold at the end of the war.

Could a more hardline (Stalinist-lite) USSR survive to this day, even after a complete economic implosion?

Quite fair, Though I do imagine that a hypothetical USSR would have a much more difficult time pulling it off considering the massive borders they would have to contend with. I think Going more hardline might buy a year or two by pillaging their satellite states, but would ultimately doom the...

Could a more hardline (Stalinist-lite) USSR survive to this day, even after a complete economic implosion?

I'm not necessarily arguing for Kruschevite reforms (though some market reforms are necessary). I'm instead arguing that coming from the Stalinist USSR they really had two options for surviving, Either going the way of China and slowly open up while massively clamping down on corruption (which...

Could a more hardline (Stalinist-lite) USSR survive to this day, even after a complete economic implosion?

They might not have had a market crash but without those reforms, the soviet union wouldn't be able to hold on to what they took half a century earlier. Not to mention there would be a good chance for the various parts of the union to revolt. It would be like a DPRK they are just objectively...

    WI: A Yellow Turban Dynasty?

What would China look like under a Yellow Turban Dynasty compared to the historical Jin. I see a more Taoist character to the dynasty, but other than that I am not sure.

    AHC: "New Christianity" in Europe?

What about the polish example? Because of the persecution the catholic church there became a means of resistance. If the USSR more openly persecutes the orthodox church, it might actually empower the church in a post USSR situation
