DBWI: What movie could defeat Star Wars 7?

From the trailers, it looks like the story involves the ship rising from the sea and going on a rampage, destroying every iceberg that it comes across.

The new Rocky XXIII movie. I’ve heard there’s a twist ending.

If Britain never passed the Nationality Act of 1948

Even better - give them a travel card. That way you can repatriate the same person several times a week and the stats will look really good.

If Britain never passed the Nationality Act of 1948

He’s actually quite good. Similar in style to some of Lenny Henry’s sketch comedy. As far as the Anglosphere was concerned, the migration was in the other direction. See the Ten Pound Poms for example.

If Britain never passed the Nationality Act of 1948

Oh, dear. Germany expelling an “unwanted” minority - I wonder why they didn’t do that? To go back to the British case, by the Seventies these guest workers will have been living there for twenty years or more and have children born there. By that time Britain was their home. As Lenny Henry put...

If Britain never passed the Nationality Act of 1948

Yeah, that German guest worker program has certainly prevented the development of a multicultural society. As @Ingsoc says, those guest workers are going to settle down in Britain, marry, have children and lead to pretty much the same situation as if the British Nationality Act had been passed.

If Britain never passed the Nationality Act of 1948

There were already refugees in Britain from WWII, not all of whom would be inclined to return home, so there’s going to be some immigration anyway. Without immigration from the Commonwealth another group, such as the Poles, could be faced with prejudice. The British Nationality Act wasn’t...

Pop Culture: The David Burton 'Doctor Who'

Yeah - who on Earth would do a story featuring singing Daleks. OK, apart from Rob Shearman, who would do a story about singing Daleks.

No ABBA at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest

Another question is what happens to Eurovision? The success of ABBA with Waterloo breathed new life into the song contest that was, by that time, becoming staid and boring. Without ABBA would the contest have survived to the present day ?

TLIAM: A Series Of Quite Fortunate Events

"The first British mainframe, known as the Electronic Brain of Great Britain, was developed for the British Government during the Sixties. Similar computers were purchased, not just by the Government, but also by Industry and the Banks. Soon everyone had the EB-GBs"

TLIAM: A Series Of Quite Fortunate Events

Great update! I don't think I'd have come through my awkward teenage years quite so soon. I still haven't developed into a network of trade unions.

Interesting, but the real question is why the rest of the party would go along with the idea ITTL.

TLIAM: A Series Of Quite Fortunate Events

I'm not sure why a renaming was necessary - it doesn't sound a very conservative thin to do. Oh No ! Think of all the poor programmers that have to write banking and accounting software using £sd !

    TLIAFD: The Doctor Is Who?

Ssshhh!! Don't say that! Ahem! It's a well known fact that Doctor Who Timelines require months of diligent research and can't just be made up over the course of a couple of days. That's better.

    TLIAFD: The Doctor Is Who?

Of course, that's part of the "Shuffling" idea - that the people being shuffled should end up having different reputations due to having performed their role at a different time. In Colin Baker's case, I thought he would have done a lot better than OTL if he'd been the Doctor during the darker...

    TLIAFD: The Doctor Is Who?

Quite. It is possible to have Doctor Who stories that barely have the Doctor in them (e.g. "Mission to the Unknown", "The Celestial Toymaker", "Blink" and "Turn Left") but they have to involve the companions or have some involvement with the Doctor. I'd level the same complaint at the Big...

    TLIAFD: The Doctor Is Who?

I'd say that was probably the best way to get a successful American Doctor Who. It is not easy to define exactly what makes Doctor Who, but the style of the writing is a large part of it and bringing British writers into the Production is a good way to capture that. The OTL TV Movie didn't...
