  1. Why Didn't Kido Butai take Midway after Pearl Harbor?

IIRC the aim was to disable Midway base for short period of time so that Kido Butai would escape undetected. A PBY from Midway could have detected the IJN carriers and japanese were not sure if there were USN forces nearby.
  2. 1941 - invading Hawaii, possible?

If logistics are not a problem for IJN, I am wondering what kind of surface fleet they would need to assemble for this kind of operation. Japanese understand that the Pacific Fleet contains about 8 standard BBs and 3 CV and when there is a need to operate near a base with considerable number of...
  3. WI: an alternate Midway and delayed Guadalcanal scenario

The more I think about this timeline, the more unrealistic it sounds. US key to success in Guadalcanal was that the marines were quickly able to occupy the airfield and form a defensive perimeter around it and were able to hold it despite limited naval and aerial support. If Guadalcanal is...
  4. WI: an alternate Midway and delayed Guadalcanal scenario

What kind of plans did the japansese have to reinforce Guadalcanal and the area? In OTL by November they had allocated so much troops and planes to the area that it may not be possible to take Guadalcanal&Tulagi with resources available to the US. But of course these reinforcements were sent...
  5. WI: May 1943 - Naval Battle at Attu

Interesting scenario here. Does anyone know how US estimated the risk of IJN intervention? This happened only few months after the Battle of Komondorski Islands, which showed that the occupied islands were not abandoned by Japan. Later in 1943 US invaded Tarawa and the invasion was protected by...
  6. Failed Pearl Harbor Attack

Some years ago a came across a listing of the statuses of the DDs at Pearl Harbor before the strike, but cannot find it now. The after action reports however give some information: https://www.history.navy.mil/research/archives/digitized-collections/action-reports/wwii-pearl-harbor-attack.html...
  7. Failed Pearl Harbor Attack

Probably most of the BBs would have been able to sortie out if ordered so. Unlike other ships in the Pearl they were not at the harbor due to maintenance issues, but because they were too slow to accompany the CV task forces. There would have been a problem in getting enough escorts (CA, CL, DD)...
  8. Failed Pearl Harbor Attack

How likely would it have been that the fleet would have sailed out toward Kido Butai if it was spotted early? Which ships were even ready to sail on short notice considering that Pacific fleet had two carriers TFs with escorts away and many of the ships in Pearl were there for maintenance. And...
  9. These 4 CVs survive - what happen next to them?

IIRC she was scheduled for overhaul due to engine problems that she encountered before the invasion of Guadalcanal. She might not make it back to South Pacific before the Santa Cruz, but if results are similar to OTL (i.e. USN has only Enterprise standing after the battle) she will definitely be...
  10. What are plausible decisions the United States could have made after Pearl Harbor to improve their performance in the war?

And how about forgetting Operation Bolero? Invasion to mainland Europe was not going to happen anytime soon and any extra aircraft in PTO from start of 1942 could take a toll advancing Japanese. In the first half of 1942 there would be a problem with basing, but base locatios like NE Australia...
  11. What are plausible decisions the United States could have made after Pearl Harbor to improve their performance in the war?

Few simple ones: Find out that F4F guns tend to jam during dogfights and fix the issue. (O’Hare airport gets a different name in this TL since the namesake’s wingman gets to share Betty kills near Rabaul) Find out and fix the warm weather problem in dive bombers sooner. As soon as this is done...
  12. Fastest Allied victory with a POD AFTER December 7, 1941

If Japan manages to create the OTL defensive barrier in the Pacific, push the British to India and occupy Dutch East Indies it is difficult to accelerate the offensives made in OTL. But during the first ~6 months of the war right after this POD there are a lot of things that can go wrong for...
  13. Effects of capturing a battleship in combat

Not that it would ever lead to actual capture of an enemy ship, but I wonder if it was possible in some really desperate situation (e.g. HMS Glowworm vs. Hipper) for a ship to ram the bigger opponent and with some luck allow an ad hoc assault team to enter it. Even a few armed individuals could...
  14. An Earlier Two Ocean Navy Act

And Wildcat will have problems with guns jamming and Dauntless will get its bombsight fogged in warm temperature. This combination will handicap USN carrier operations during the first months of war no matter if TONA comes earlier.
  15. No Pearl Harbour raid. Victory for Japan?

It is hard not to agree with this estimate, but I would really like to see a more detailed timeline covering this topic. Also would be interesting to know exact timeframe to throw in an educated guess which ones of the ships commissioned in 1941 would be able to participate to the epic battles...
  16. WI: Kuritas Central Force meets Admirals Oldendorf's 7th Fleet

What kind of tactics were used in this game? I would imagine that USN at this point of war knew about the capabilities of long lances and tried to minimize the risk to capital ships. Oldendorf also had a number of DDs to harass the enemy before getting into good firing distance. And of course...
  17. WI: Kuritas Central Force meets Admirals Oldendorf's 7th Fleet

Taffys offer the least amount of trouble if Kurita decides to just pass them and head towards Leyte or if they are missed altogether (e.g. a scout plane identifies the incoming ships and Taffys run away east before being seen). Hunting and sinking all the ships in three groups will consume fuel...
  18. Leyte Gulf

One really interesting part of this battle would be how the Clevelands with their rapid firing 6" guns (quite a lot of them in this fight) would be able to keep IJN DDs away from getting into good long lance distance. Any ideas on how this would go?
  19. AHC: 1941-42, best possible aircraft for USN carriers

Should be enough time to fix the gun jamming problem in Wildcat and bombsight fogging problem in Dauntless. This alone would help a lot during the first 6-12 months of the war. And if there is any spare time try to accelerate F4F-4 with working drop tanks, 4 guns and few more HP than in OTL.
  20. The Japanese take Darwin in World War II.

Even if it was as easy to throw air raids against Townsville as it was from Rabaul to Guadalcanal (which had its own problems OTL), wouldn't this just create an earlier opportunity for a war of attrition against the Japanese for allied forces? And over much better air bases than Guadalcanal...
