  1. Continuation of US mass transit WI: Cincinnati subway completed and in use

I saw a thread about this. I also found that construction on the Cincinnati subway started later than those in Boston, Philadelphia and Newark. So I wonder if the Blue chip city subway might well have been completed and been in use had construction started earlier. This underground section could...
  2. Sixto Rodriguez is a more successful singer and songwriter

I did start a thread about this before but got the spelling wrong. So again, suppose he started his musical career early, say as early as 1962, made more albums and was more successful. Could he have been the jewel in Motown's crown?
  3. WI: More double albums before the compact disc

First some information: The average folk/rock/pop album released before the compact disc was less than 45 minutes long. While classical LPs often had up to half an hour per side, rock and pop albums longer than 45 minutes tended to be double albums. A compact disc (digital audio) can hold up 80...
  4. Sexto Rodríguez is a more successful singer and songwriter

I did start another thread about him to introduce him. Also, check out his website.
  5. Sexto Rodríguez is a more successful singer and songwriter

Ask someone who has seen the documentary In Search of Sugar Man.
  6. Sexto Rodríguez is a more successful singer and songwriter

Except that his own songs are in English, not Spanish. Say he makes his first record as early as 1962 or a little earlier and then goes on to make a lot more material, perhaps including some double albums.
  7. Sexto Rodríguez is a more successful singer and songwriter

@JuliantheUnknown, @Mr. Havana, & @ennobee - Can you imagine Rodríguez having a more successful career, making more albums over a longer period? Perhaps he would have started in 1962 (when he turned 20) or maybe earlier.
  8. AHC Downunder: Mainland Australian mainline railways standardise on 5'3''

I do not know that much about New Zealand's railways but I do know that both the North Island and the South Island railways have standardised on cape gauge. Railways of New Zealand have never needed to be interoperable with Australian railways. I have noticed that there is or used to be narrow...
  9. AHC Downunder: Mainland Australian mainline railways standardise on 5'3''

Could rail travel have been more competitive had heavy rail across the mainland been standardised on one gauge?
  10. AHC on utility frequency
    Threadmarks: Only the third post

So if the number of cycles per second in North America and parts of Asia and South America is the same as the number of seconds in a minute and minutes in an hour, why has the rest of the world standardised on a frequency 10Hz less?
  11. AHC Downunder: Mainland Australian mainline railways standardise on 5'3''

A lot of things are not upside down even here. Only the seasons and North-South climate variation.
  12. AHC: More bike paths prewar or just after WWII

Are many of these tracks shared paths?
  13. AHC: More bike paths prewar or just after WWII

So the UK government had a plan that would have been good for cyclists and what if they didn't oppose it and restarted the bike programme as part of postwar reconstrutions?
  14. What if Sony made an extended play U-matic instead of Betamax?

Sony did attempt to licence Betamax but manufactures like R.C.A didn't want to buy licences to build video recorders that could only record for 90 minutes. Laserdisc was launched after even VHS and couldn't record at home.
  15. What if Sony made an extended play U-matic instead of Betamax?

It's not so much about the tape width as the dimensions of the cassette. Suppose Sony had kept the cassette dimensions (other than thickness) the same and extending the record time. The record time of U-Matic was at least enough for studios, each with multiple machines handling multiple...

  18. WI: Bicycle lifts appeared during the first bicycle

Apparently there isn't a fee to use the Trondheim lift.
  19. WI: Bicycle lifts appeared during the first bicycle
Threadmarks: Relevant point about our timeline

Could the leisure market be the market, or maybe one of them, that saved velocipedes such as bicycles from obsolescence?
  20. WI: Bicycle lifts appeared during the first bicycle

Maybe a petition signed by utility cyclists would have changed the minds of these organisations and protected bikes lanes actually go against banning pedal power vehicles from roads. What was that plan? Was it clear that cars were going to be more common than horse-drawn carriages ever were...
