  1. United States taking the initiative in the Pacific War

i meant in the pacific, not overall. I doubt even in this scenario they'd redirect the atlantic fleet to the pacific.
  2. Explosion in New York Harbor in 1943

Seems like an explosion equivalent to Port Chicago Disaster. Its not exactly the Halifax explosion then. Now that would render New York quite cripppled for a long time.
  3. United States taking the initiative in the Pacific War

They'd be going on the initiative against the world's biggest, most advanced, well trained and deadly fleet in the world at that time. Heavily underprepared. Where would they strike? If they'd have the element of surprise i doubt they launch attacks from the Phillipinnes, too easy t ospot for...
  4. With hindsight, what should have been the US strategy in Vietnam?

what air support can do is delay the inevitable. Was the air support going to keep south vietnam alive? Hell no. War is won on the ground.
  5. Better names for US warships

USS I love the smell of napalm in the morning I'm sorry
  6. With hindsight, what should have been the US strategy in Vietnam?

air support didn't do squad. airpower can only do so much, it can't singlehandedly win a ground war. You need capable troops on the ground. They bombed the shit out of Vietnam, most intense in the 70's, without any results(meant for pr anyway). More does not mean a win.
  7. With hindsight, what should have been the US strategy in Vietnam?

Politics. There has to be true democracy in Vietnam. That means Diem needs to fall(best in 1955, but whatever). The country needs to be able to build its own economy. This all includes the US not interfering of course, no boots on the ground either. In order to show the weakness of the North...
  8. With hindsight, what should have been the US strategy in Vietnam?

I've recently finished reading Max Hastings book 'Vietnam: an Epic Tragedy' and i'd like to weigh in here. Because it sounds to me this scenario of "gung ho" is like a typical Westmoreland and even Abrams type of response to the question they themselves were asked by US presidents. And its...
  9. An alternate history of Japanese carrier development.

well alright then @mack8 @jsb first the german one, not that interesting tbh. next the 2 US ones and finally the 2 UK French, Italian, Russian, Dutch. no clue if there are more. I don't even know who made them unfortunately. colour coding seems lot more clear on these though, they...
  10. An alternate history of Japanese carrier development.

Well only if the OP @Naval Aviation Fan doesn't mind. If not I can PM them of course. Like i said the Japanese one is incomplete as it misses several ships build at shipyards depicted(Zuikaku was build at Kawasaki as well) and ends before 1944. The ones i have for US, UK and Germany are...
  11. An alternate history of Japanese carrier development.

This is a nice chart i found some time ago to help: although obviously imcomplete but i was never able to find the second part. I got them for US, German, and UK ship building too. Addendum: Don't ask me what the colours mean though. No idea.
  12. What would be the best way for a B-29 to drop a nuke in contested airspace?

people are getting way off topic here. just a reminder.
  13. The Ukrainian ark

    exactly. Russia not happy.
  14. The Ukrainian ark

its nice to have a navy, but can they maintain it? I doubt it. Plus NATO is basically arming the Ukraine. This is bound to go into current politics discussion as well.
  15. What would be the best way for a B-29 to drop a nuke in contested airspace?

Depends on if there is radar or not but the best way to do it is to do it when they don't know you're doing it. B-29 could operate at about 10KM altitude so nobody will probably notice it at night. But thats without radar. With radar yo have to get the shortest route to Moscow(from an allied...
  16. No Vietnam war - what happens in Biafra?

    I have 1 word, just 1: advisers.
  17. Did the Soviet Union plan to annex Finland during the Winter War?

I don't tihnk you read that right, there is no indication Stalin wanted Finland annexed. The difference between the baltic states and Finland is that the red army in the revolution never tried to invade Finland, but they did and failed with the baltic states and Poland. Thats why the batlic...
  18. Did the Soviet Union plan to annex Finland during the Winter War?

I doubt they would annex it. Its not a Soviet State. Probably a puppet state like Mongolia or Tannu Tuva. Or something in between, depending on war results.
  19. What if instead of 9/11, a shipborne IED attack on a major harbour?

well if they are going for symbolism with a ship they'd sail a bit more upriver along manhattan and park the thing next to the UN building. You know, if they really want to piss literally everyone off.
  20. What if instead of 9/11, a shipborne IED attack on a major harbour?

so why wouldn't the terrorist try to pack their ship with a more effective explosive like RDX or HMX? They'd need a lot less(half) so a smaller boat. Just a thought though.
