IJN Soryu's and USS Wasp's Durability and Usefulness

Or Withers' botched submarine deployments and the torpedoes could have worked. The situation one suggested (^^^) is the Tone search plane argument applied to American "luck" which actually was mostly "bad" at Midway. Like Mitscher's incompetence, it smooths out statistically. The likelihood...
  2. How important was the Dunkirk evacuation ?

As mentioned by others if the BEF was lost the mid to long term impact on the combat capabilities of the British Army would be significant, if as likely they remain in the war, would they for example be able to support an effective North African campaign while holding the forces "needed" to...

  4. Soviet Union with much less killed by Germany

Because the Soviet Union had problems The losses they suffered in world war II were used to unify the country Fewer losses means it might not be as effective. The Soviet Union had internal divisions which became apparent in the 1980s, those internal divisions would probably show up sooner.
  5. How important was the Dunkirk evacuation ?

I see that Dunkirk was a political victory which allowed Churchil to survive.
  6. Alternate warships of nations

I guess we're looking at these guys. For the navy they buy the old Iron Duke from the UK, along with HMS Vindictive which they have converted to an aircraft carrier.

You forgot the South Alberta Light Horse. I also served in the FGH, it started my career in the Reg Force Armour. I was Garry from 70-74, when I joined the Regs.
  8. Hawker Hurricane even more prolific and versatile?

Do you credit a Canadian contractor with the ability to effectively redesign a bad engine? I'm not sure I would. It took the OEM 18mo to straighten it out. (How much of that was an unwillingness to acknowledge they'd gone down a rabbit hole, IDK.;) ) I don't doubt a Canadian firm has...
  9. What if communism didn’t exist

Fascism has a rationality to it. It's dark, ugly, and undesirable, but it follows internally. With Nazism though there is no rationality.
  10. How important was the Dunkirk evacuation ?

It saved a lot of troops and experienced officers that would prove viable later in the war More importantly it was a big morale boost If the Germans had bagged the entire BEF , morale would have plummeted and could have led to a negotiated peace
  11. Soviet Union with much less killed by Germany

I really struggle to understand this point of view. Why should no mass death of a generation, no extinction of millions of Soviet citiziens weaken the Soviet Union. If anything the fact that your country is not destroyed and you didn't lost a whole generation is stabilizing the country.
  12. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

Possibly, could be an interesting outcome. Could also lead to other interim solutions such as refitting the Boys like the PzB 39 eventually became the GrB 39. Britain already has an anti tank rifle grenade and while it wasn't brilliant and couldn't be improved because of the limitations of using...
  13. Alternate warships of nations

I'm tempted to just suggest some of the proposals made from the 20's and 30's for the Irish Free State/Ireland, and then for the traitor angle just suggest what they did in OTL, (might be a bit harsh on finance/defence/cabinet but it's pretty much the worst you could do without Treason...
  14. What if communism didn’t exist

yet it made enough sense because the USSR was there hitler just inserted a great conspiracy that the jews were going to use communisim to weaken and then destroy germany what iam saying if that the alt nazis dont have that and part hitler rise to power was also him denouncing communisms and due...
  15. A Queen Twice Over: Mary Tudor the Elder Marries Francis I of France

Ironically, this unwanted royal marriage, if it bears fruit, might very well be the salvation of the Habsburg Dynasty, as it injects real, genuine, non-Habsburg blood into Charles' family. So perhaps just a little bit less of that (in)famous Habsburg Jaw?
  16. Soviet Union with much less killed by Germany

Somewhat stronger and not as politically stable the mass of death toll the Soviet suffered in the second world war help cement the us against the world philosophy that held the Soviet Union together for 50 years after the war Without that philosophy, the problems that were ignored for 50 years...
  17. Cinco de Mayo

The fact that roosevelt and Hearst are swapping career positions worries me. And also makes me curious.
  18. AHC: Peerless Air Ministry

I’m sorry Allan I thought I was playing into your original pun, “peer of the realm: a member of the class of peers who has the right to sit in the House of Lords.” only recently has the convention that the PM be from the commons. Ministers were commonly from the Lords. Government is normally...

Well, I'll hope alongside you for a "soft pitch Friday". And even though I might have some good ideas myself by then, I still wouldn't be mad if you become more successful than I do if a pitch meeting does happen. And besides, I can't translate any of my ideas to real drawings either, and I...

WI Spain does nothing to assist American independence

Not remotely true, this sounds like you're twisting a John Adams quote that's usually taken out of context and isn't really based on anything other than his own supposition anyway. John Adams said 1/3 were in favor, 1/3 against, and 1/3 neutral in reference to the French Revolution. While exact...
