WI Italy discovers oil in Libya in early 1930s?

Other than the Italians to do things with Italians only, and not rely on foreigners The Moose was the the only one on earth who kept Ford out of their domestic Auto market. Otherwise Italy would have been in much better place, with US commercial and industrial goods commonplace, rather than...

    DBWI: no Franco-Spanish Union 1580

Well Queen Joanna I of Spain and King Charles IX were a power couple so without them maybe the Habsburgs would be stronger?
  3. WI Italy discovers oil in Libya in early 1930s?

Everyone in the thread seems to be looking at the impact on WWII, but I would posit that an oil discovery in the 1930s means Italy stays neutral or at least doesn't formally join the war against the Allies. They know that access to the oil and getting it to Europe will basically be impossible...

It was a pretty diverse set too. Everything from rubber blights to aliens.

OOC: I thought Salic law excludes women full stop. Although I guess if the male line went extinct thed wouldn’t have much choice.
  6. How long would it take for the Confederates to abolish slavery if they won the civil war?

Decades, if ever, and it will likely transform into a system of debt and land peonage more brutal and static than OTL's sharecropper system. The Confederate Constitution protected slavery as an institution more than the US Constitution did. Article IV prevented individual States from limiting...

Hilariously this is the one prompt (of mine or anyone else) that I hadn't thought about so I have a mental blank slate. Cool! (Also, thanks for giving the prompt a better name then mine!)

WI Italy discovers oil in Libya in early 1930s?

anyone can do deep drilling in the 1920s. It's just very expensive for anyone to do without Hughes Tooling involved, until their patent protection ran out Soviets copied the Atom Bomb and B-29, could couldn't make as good drill head as what Howard Hughes had control over

WI Italy discovers oil in Libya in early 1930s?

Oil extraction capabilities were different in 1960 than they were in 1930, especially in a land with little infrastructure Pulling Oil from a few mile outside Vienna was different than the deep desert, too.

OOC: Well even Salic Law allows female/female descended claimants to ascend in the event of all male lines of the previous dynasty dying out. That being said, there's like a gazillion Capets out there killing them all off would cause shockwaves so King of France-Queen of Spain makes more sense...
  12. WI British/Italian war in the 1930s

The Italian Pilots were very good. For all the faults of the Italian military the Air force was very well trained and in the early and mid 30's their aircraft were world class.
  13. DBAHC: Why were the Ottomans and Safavids reluctant to go to war with each other.

The Ottomans were lucky they had Swedish officers training them in the 1640s and showed them a few tricks. Who knows what would have happened else when the winged hussars arrived to help Wienna but were cut to pieces. Sweden and Ottomans does not have the same religion, but is the guarantee for...
  14. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

Getting this looked at and sorted early is only a good thing but as mentioned the trade off between building tanks and building spares means you have to choose what gets built. In time the problem will resolve itself as tank numbers increase and better performance means fewer break down or are...
  15. Pride Goes Before a Fall: A Revolutionary Greece Timeline

I think one of the causes of the next russo-turkish war has been revealed. After all, we know that "many more falling in the years that followed" There was another aspect of the Ottoman atrocities of the era: Slavery. During the Bulgarian Horrors around 10,000 women and children were sold as...

WI: Warsaw Pact armies if USSR liberalizes

I'm not quite familiar with post-Stalin politics, the only one I know of in any depth are Krushchev, Kosygin, and Suslov, none of which seem like the type to liberalize. Are there any politicians at the time who even dared to suggest something like that?
  17. WI: Warsaw Pact armies if USSR liberalizes

Short answer: maybe. Odds are, a liberalizing USSR will have better relations with the West and spend much less proportionally on the military. If we assume a larger Soviet economy (which is a major assumption, to be clear. There are a LOT of ways for liberalization to go wrong for the USSR, as...
