  1. How long would it take for the Confederates to abolish slavery if they won the civil war?

I'm not sure the transitive property would apply. The CSA wins because in spite of havin a disadvantage in men and supplies, they're defending their home turf. In a Texas secession war, Texas is in the same position as the CSA was during the Civil War - and would be in a position to win for the...
  2. Disaster at Dunkirk and German invasion of Russia in August 1940

For perspective, the Wehrmacht was in no condition to invade France after Poland capitulated in 1939. How in the world could they invade the Soviet Union after a wildly successful campaign in the West in 1940?

    Threadmarks: President Valenti, Part 2

US President Al Valenti had won what he considered a mandate. After his reelection, congress passed a bill to enact universal healthcare. But what he really wanted to do was to join Russia in its war against Japan. He was just waiting for the right time to push for a declaration of war. The...
  4. List of German Chancellors (1949 - 2030)

(Most likely) Tomorrow, I'll take a double turn - and probably a very special one - if nobody has provided a chancellor by then. I have a specific plan on how to end this list in 2050, by the way, namely with a very prominent and well-known person who in OTL is not a German citizen...

In the absence of Islam, which religion becomes the primary competitor to Christianity?

We also have no guarantee there wouldn't be another, similar version of Islam, born under somewhat different circumstances. While I do not subscribe to some of the more highly revisionist interpretations of early Islamic history, there is something to be said for the idea that the time was right...
  7. What would the Americas be like if the Chinese colonized it?

...this depends entirely on where the Chinese land, where exactly they go, and what they do in the places they go. Establishing a colonial presence in *Oregon doesn't mean you'll have any influence whatsoever on goings-on in *Kansas (or even *Idaho). And are we talking about small trading...
  8. in U.S. circa 1990, “nanny state” takes the intellectual space of “political correctness”

More discussion such as the above! :) Less knee-jerk opposition to full civil rights for African-Americans. And I mean, not just de jure, but also de facto, such as job acceptance and promotion, home appraisals, ability to effectively negotiate at car dealerships, etc, etc.

    Map Thread XX

Unfortunately, yes. Based on what I've read of Well Enough Alone, apparently the war got started when someone walked in on the crazy fucker having sexual relations with the bodies of three Pioneer Girls he murdered. (Yep. I'm not kidding.) Avoid this, and we probably avoid the civil war - good...
  10. The Undying Empire: A Trebizond Timeline

The more I read, the more I think the words “Utterly fucked” is more suited for David’s reign. He’s gonna have to deal with a two way invasion against two powerful enemies with highly competent generals and both have superior numbers compared to him. Hes gonna need some powerful luck, skill, and...
  11. German completely adopts the defensive September 1942

The Soviets took 20 million deaths during the war, plus another 5-10 million during the Holodmor. Depending on whose numbers you want to take that is 20-30% of the entire population, That the society didn't simply fracture into a failed state. There is a case to be made that the Soviets never...
  12. In the absence of Islam, which religion becomes the primary competitor to Christianity?

You misunderstood my point. My point was that the rise of Islam had an effect that changed Papal policy in Europe and likewise alongside it, led to an increased power of the Mayors of the Palace as agents of a new form of religious reform in Christianity. The Merovingians prior to the rise of...

German completely adopts the defensive September 1942

I heard Halder was sacked because he was delusional about the state of affairs on the ground. I believe I remember hearing a quote of Hitler saying of Halder, "He only thinks in maps."
  14. the best movies never made

Jaws is a classic and about as close to a perfect movie as you can get but here’s an idea. The “Hooper” marine-biologist character is a Japanese-American woman. That would certainly make the interaction with Quint much, much more tense
  15. How realistic of an option was France joining the commonwealth?

In 1956 French Prime Minister Guy Mollet proposed to British PM Anthony Eden that France and the UK merge into one country with common citizenship and with the Queen as head of state. When Eden turned this down, Mollet proposed that France join the commonwealth. Although Eden turned that...

What if Russia invested more heavily into American colonization?

I don't know, the settlements don't have to be massive, the Russians have a long cushion of time before the Spanish, French, British, or Americans reach the Pacific North West, their colonization can be slow at first. I agree that the impetus isn't really there until it's too late, but I don't...
  18. German completely adopts the defensive September 1942

Isn't that was what the Halder firing was really all about, the German offensive had pretty much played out, no one was facing reality. The OP is sort of facing reality in a Hilter sort of way, hold on to stuff but don't die there if pressed..
  19. What if Russia invested more heavily into American colonization?

The natives were used to what’s available but the Russian settlers had been dying from scurvy and starvation in the early XIX. Probably they could do some gardening but lacked the needed experience material (just a guess).
