  1. How long would it take for the Confederates to abolish slavery if they won the civil war?

I don't think they were very different in general, but their constitution did explicitly prohibit secession. (This wasn't mere hypocrisy, as is sometimes assumed. The CSA's legal case was based on the fact that the US constitution nowhere prohibited secession, and hence it fell under the powers...
  2. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

If moviegoers at the time didn't know what to expect when both logos showed up, then I wouldn't be surprised. Wait. So far? So you mean that this movie would lead to a couple of films from either studio getting both logos at once in the near future? In that case, YAHOO!
  3. Crimson Banners Fly: The Rise of the American Left

The reason I bring this up was because of what came out the day before the update: It's pretty prominent. So I imagine that Teddy would blame the increasing violence and worse issues on the Democrats here and probably some of the Republicans. Basically, as we saw in Russia, the communists...
  4. Disaster at Dunkirk and German invasion of Russia in August 1940

The Soviet state of readiness is even more piss poor. The primary reason for the initial success of Barbarossa was strategic surprise, not the superiority of German equipment. The Soviet Airforce was decimated in the first week of Barbarossa. Once the Germans have control of Soviet airspace...
  5. Keynes' Cruisers Volume 2

I may have read it incorrectly, then. I withdraw my nitpick.
  6. Alternate Italian Unification Discussion Thread

Ostensibly, some sort of deal regarding a Union of the Italian Constitutional States. My impression is that he just wanted to show that he was doing something without doing anything substantial.

AHC/WI: Stronger IJN light cruiser line

Thanks for the Zero thing. I did know that but it slipped my mind. Buin was constructed too late, in November 1942. It had been captured much earlier that year and, IMO, they should have started work on it earlier. I found Yamada, as you can see in my post, but thanks for the confirmation!
  8. Keynes' Cruisers Volume 2

Err, that isn't what he said. The 20mm Oerlikon guns are firing nearly continuously in general support. The 40 mm Bofors and 5"/38 guns are firing in response to any detected hostile fire, hence the reference to "Anytime the Germans fired".

That's quite the achievement for a state that dominates Afro-Eurasia to such an extent. Why are the Americans so cool with this? Also what happened with Afghanistan? How is Egypt still a thing? Lastly, nuking Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem how is that working out for the Soviets?

AHC/WI: Stronger IJN light cruiser line

@CV12Hornet , @McPherson , @Dorknought : in late 1942 11th Air Fleet, the land-based planes at Rabaul, were commanded by this man: http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/T/s/Tsukahara_Nizhizo.htm Now note his dates of rank. Tsukahara became VAdm on 15th November 1939. Mikawa, meanwhile, was VAdm on 15th...
  11. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

Well, let's go with The Common Enemy for Star Trek III, then.
  12. AHC/WI: Stronger IJN light cruiser line

D3A, yes, sorry. I should also note that the Japanese were badly hampered by the A6M3 Model 32 not having the range to operate over Guadalcanal from Rabaul, unlike the A6M2 Model 21, hence the (ultimately futile) efforts to get the Buin airfield up and running. Rear Admiral Sadayoshi Yamada...

A South American World War 1 Craze

It seems likely to me that Peru-Bolivia would be more likely to side with Brazil due to the hostile relations between Chile/Colombia and the USA

20mm were Orlekons not Bofors. Had to nitpick. ;-)

Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

From the stats, looked like more liters of Vodka than sacks of potatoes, since Alcoholism had increased, along with the related deaths What what I saw of the pricing of the era, the Vodka was far less, as prices fell in the '90s In December 1990, the average Russian monthly income would get 10...

    Threadmarks: Ch.04.04 Southern Gambit

By 1493 Ainxiou had his hand forced. What funds he did have were gone and with them his time to prepare. He would need to act fast if he were to ever restore the power of his house and excerpt full control over his kingdom again. And with this in mind he began to accelerate his plans as soon as...
  17. WI: Warsaw Pact armies if USSR liberalizes

Yeah, but Tibet is very different from Eastern Europe. China already had de facto and de jure control over Tibet before the reforms. The USSR only had de facto control over Poland, while Warsaw was officially an independent nation. Also, Tibet's economy and population is very small. While the...
  18. Keep the Essex class as a strike carrier

Extremely. For one, as you guessed, there really aren't any decommissioned SSNs lying around. Nautilus, the very first, was only decommissioned in 1980 and any decision of retaining Essexes as strike carriers needs to happen in the 1960s. For another, decommissioned submarine reactors would need...

  20. How accurate is the description of the Naval War in the Atlantic in Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising"?

It's also not like NATO didn't have it's own sleight-of-hands it planned to use, even if they weren't as numerous as the Soviets. For instance, since the Soviets drilled to weight successive attacks against the path of least resistance, a lot of NATO tactical defensive plans tended to rely on...
