  1. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

Impossible with the decline in oil prices in the '80s, thanks to Saudi Arabia. Revenue was drying up and public spending was bankrupting the USSR. Cuts are inevitable. Norway had/has the advantage of being a very small country in comparison. Also, a planned economy run by computers requires a...
  2. How would Woodrow Wilson be remembered without WWI?

Even worse than OTL. The man was extremely racist and imperialist wrt America's backyard. No WWI and there would be even greater focus on that.
  3. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

    1. Losing the Baltics can't be equated to dissolving the Union, what I imagined is more or less a loose federation aka Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics 2. I mean Russia was not that poor, it had a strong manufacturing base, an educated population, and most importantly loooots of oil (like norway)
  4. How accurate is the description of the Naval War in the Atlantic in Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising"?

    a) Because this would be a major attack, hundreds of planes crossing the inner-German border and hitting various targets. b) Because this would also smash the plan of the Soviet attack. Soviets were quite paranoid about a NATO-first attack, do not underestimate that fact. Soviet plans of attack...

Lincoln Lives: How a failed assassination changed the course of a Nation and a newly freed people

Maybe a backup location for African Americans who need to leave the area. Somewhere with a more stable climate and not so prone to natural disasters.
  6. WI: The Enterprise completes its five year mission (Star Trek survives for 5 seasons)

If I give Flash Gordon to Lucas that's going to be a whole new branch of the timeline. Question is do I want to go that route? Maybe he makes both? A Lucas-run Flash Gordon would stick relatively closely to the original material and not go comedic
  7. Stanley Baldwin's Successful Political Gamble: A TL from 1923

The Speaker of the House of Reptesentatives was Sam Rayburn (Texas 4th- Democrat) and the Minority Leader was Joseph Martin (Massachusetts 14th - Republican). The Majority Leader in the Senate was Joseph Lister Hill (Alabama- Democrat). The Minority Leader was Wallace White (Maine-...
  8. How accurate is the description of the Naval War in the Atlantic in Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising"?

Not to mention the stunt the US Navy pulled in NorPac 82. Four days of everything in the Soviet Far East that could sail, fly, or submerge looking and they couldn't find Midway, and this only after the US Navy deliberately tipped their hand that Midway was even there in the first place. The US...
  9. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

    1. Not dissolving the country would help but it is difficult to see how it not losing at least some of its territory, particularly the Baltics. 2. More China than Norway as it certainly could not afford Norway. Russia is dirt poor. The second is impossible. Entire economies are impossible to...
  10. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

Co-branding isn't really uncommon IOTL. On some street corners in the US, they have Taco Bell and KFC in the same building. Others you might see a KFC with Long John Silvers, or Pizza Hut or whatever. As for some titles having both logos, it'll mostly be either on accident, or if there are...

Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

The Baltic States, the Caucasus and the 'Stans, were wanting to be gone from the USSR. No stopping that without troops
  13. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

That probably would have simply drawn things out. Things would have been somewhat better in the short run but would have taken forever. Russia might still have a lot of state owned industry today and that is no way to develop.
  14. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

You could avoid the catastrophic effects of the collapse of the USSR by: 1. Don't dissolve the Country in the first place and don't do shock therapy 2. Either reform the country so it probably would have an economy somewhere between China/Yugoslavia and Norway or double down and go into the...

WI: The Enterprise completes its five year mission (Star Trek survives for 5 seasons)

Start Trek had been winning Emmys, so sci-fi was getting high-brow. The De Laurentiis produced, _Barbarella_ was anything but. in the early '70s, it seemed that sci-fi was getting more thoughtful, with _2001_,_Silent Running_ and _Andromeda Strain_ but with outliers like the Planet of the Apes...
  16. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

One thing to remember is all transitions are painful. People are used to the old system and until they are used to the new one it is going to be painful. That said besides what I said earlier about stocks I think a high initial tariff might have helped. Maybe GATT +70 percentage points dropping...

  18. What are some likely convergences?

They weren't just a dumping ground for Puritans, but having Puritans to dump probably did encourage stronger colonial growth than would have otherwise been the case.
  19. WI: Warsaw Pact armies if USSR liberalizes

The Soivet had de facto, if not de jure ownership of the East as soon as the Red Army set foot there. De jure is a tricky issue with the Pact countries since they were "independent", but only as long as the did exactly what Moscow wanted. The minute they deviated from that control the tanks...
  20. AHC/WI: Stronger IJN light cruiser line

They did start work on it early, pretty much as soon as the need arose. But they had a dire lack of earth-moving equipment so progress was extremely slow.
