  1. Soviet low level air defense missiles: too little too late ?

To put it on another angle, a 2% loss rate means that each aircraft has a 50 missions life expectancy. To maintain 100 sorties per day, you loose two aircraft per day. So if you want to fly, say, 100 fighter bomber missions per day for a year you will loose more than 600 aircraft in a year which...
  2. Soviet low level air defense missiles: too little too late ?

Ya, the ZSU-23 is a very capable opponent.
  3. Soviet low level air defense missiles: too little too late ?

Don't forget the ZSU-23 which the Soviets built in large numbers and that proved to be major pain in the ass as far back as Vietnam, and starting in the early 1980s the Tunguska system. The SA-3 and SA-6 could engage at 100 meters, combined with the ZSU they are remarkably lethal The A-10...
  4. Explain the AH Quote

A line from the long-running American science fiction series Doctor Who, specifically referring to the 13th Doctor, portrayed by Donald Glover, during the mid-2000s. Here, he was needing some articles of clothing to disguise a certain way to infilitrate an alien cult conducting experiments on...

Perhaps you could delay the pig war so it breaks out during the ACW?

Likely marriage candidates for a surviving William, Duke of Gloucester?

I suspect a Dutch match might have been on the cards too. One of the younger Nassau-Dietz Princesses - Isabelle, Johanna, Louise or Henriette.
  7. Soviet low level air defense missiles: too little too late ?

Correct. The USAF suffered about .4 lost aircraft per 1000 sorties; I can't find US Navy numbers but they were probably pretty similar. By comparison, that number was 2 per 1000 sorties in Korea and .65 per 1000 sorties in Desert Storm.
  8. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

Essentially, it's a tripwire with a Claymore attached. Sure, it'll do a bit of damage up front, but it's main purpose is to wake up the defenders.
  9. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

While the US went up around the same while Western Europe about half that from a higher base in both cases. A lot of that growth is questionable IMO, because the US routinely overestimated the value of Soviet goods by assigning a "cost value" to them instead of their real value. The vast...

    An alternate cold war

Alongside a Soviet Straits. Also, do you have any problem with communist Kurdistan and Azerbaiyan?
  11. Rise of Ultralight helicopters

Well, there are still a few military roles that they could serve nevertheless. For example, they could still hypothetically be used for ASW, since a submerged submarine can't really attack any kind of aircraft (at least through most of the Cold War). The advantage here would be that they would...
  12. In a freak coincidence, both Stalin and Hitler die during the beginning of Operation Barbarossa

In terms of Germany, does it matter? Germany is fucked the second Barbarossa begins; they’ve pissed off the Russians, and in any TL with a POD of at least ten minutes after Barbarossa commences, Russia pounds Germany into the mud, no ifs, ands or buts. The Soviet Union will at least cobble...
  13. How would the Confederates deal with the Comanche

And people do sometimes do something to prove they’re “not that way.” Hopefully, the CSA will try this out West. And they’re get on a roll — trade’s better than war.

  16. Soviet low level air defense missiles: too little too late ?

I know lots of guys who flew NATO attack aircraft in the 80s. At the time they expected not to survive more than a few missions in a WW3 scenario in Europe. I'm wargames we always ran out of aircraft before we ran out of targets... Considering the amount of ressources the USAF and USN had, their...
  17. DBAHC give Canada a west coast

I suppose that you could annex some or all of Oregon to Canada, but how could you do that? There were good reasons for these two British dominions to be separated.
  18. In a freak coincidence, both Stalin and Hitler die during the beginning of Operation Barbarossa

The Final Solution will vary in details but Goering was as much of a Nazi as Hitler or Goebbels and he will still want a Judenfrei Reich and any deportation solution will fail on the issue of no one else wanting Jewish refugees and the Nazis preferring to eliminate the "Jewish menace" once and...
  19. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

Guess I was wrong there. Still, that same table shows GDP in the former USSR increasing by almost an order of magnitude while it was around, so it clearly had significant economic growth.
  20. DBAHC give Canada a west coast

Pretty obvious. Any ideas on how to plausibly give Canada a Pacific coastline?
