  1. AHC: Roman Canaries

If those Murex snails are the same ones that produce purple dye, then that is an incredibly valuable commodity that Roman merchants would love to have an alternative source of, even if it's from as far flung a location as the Canaries. That would probably merit at least a small trading post...
  2. In the absence of Islam, which religion becomes the primary competitor to Christianity?

Didn't have state backing. I can see a no Islam world having a strong conflict between Catholic and Orthodox Christianity.
  3. An 1-engine fast bomber for 1935-45?

To be fair this issue affected a number of previously successful firms in UK, US and other countries. Reliable 1000+ HP engines were not easy, ones that would fit into a fighter were even more challenging. Ditto the transition to modern airframe construction, increasing complexity of aircraft...
  4. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

The faction is as you said Halifax, Chamberlain and others. To be fair I am basing most of my impression on the film Darkest Hour about the may crisis and Churchill but unless this is wildly inaccurate it presents a picture of a Churchill on the verge of giving up. I may however be wrong. By...
  5. What if Admiral Yamamoto survived World War II

War crimes - specifically the execution of the survivors of USS Edsall.
  6. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

For the record, there's really no way this is plausible. The Germans were nowhere near capturing Dunkirk on the 24th, with or without the much-maligned halt order. But for the sake of an interesting What If, let's say it does happen somehow... The US will almost certainly embargo them. Since...
  7. in U.S. circa 1990, “nanny state” takes the intellectual space of “political correctness”

...has some major racist streaks all through it [as well as resentment and scapegoating due to a declining middle class], but people who buy into it and think that PC is a major menace will swear up and down that it doesn’t. * the backlash being so much stronger than the thing itself ever was!
  8. Pop-culture in TL-191

Churchill, Oswald Mosely, Franklin Roosevelt, Heinz Guderian, and even Hitler all existed in TL191 (Turtledove confirmed Guderian's anti-semitic orderly was Hitler)
  9. AHC: The US with a high speed rail system as prolific as in East Asia or western Europe

One area where the US passenger rail infrastructure being improved would be hugely impactful would be heavy rapid transit and other urban (I.e. commuter) rail; shiny bullet train proposals Miss the forest for the trees, because as others have pointed out we’d get bang for buck just by having...
  10. WI: Henri de Guise survives

OK. Henry III is dead. The Salic Law is abandoned and Margarite is a closest relative and, as such, is pretender #1 as far as alt-legality goes. Her imprisonment is over. Now, who is the person most interested in her getting the crown? Her husband: whatever are their relations, the attitudes of...

Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

I honestly think you're overestimating how quickly Germany and Spain could capture Gibraltar. Plus as was already stated, most shipping already went around Africa.
  12. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

Before the arrival of the Matlidas the British were at a severe disadvantage in Egypt. Italy had superiority in the air and overwhelming superiority in artillery. If Balbo acts quickly he could reach the Nile before October using a mechanized force. There would also be a long delay before the...
  13. Count of Crisco

    Alternate Aircraft of Nations

Its not a nation that exists currently. But the analogy is similar. The British did not want this state to side with the Axis as it has resources that could turn the tide, and its own capable military. As some aviation backstory this nation began to expand its rather modest aircraft industry in...
  14. oshron

    What are some likely convergences?

one thing i forgot to mention until you pointed it out--coal was also basically the only resource Britain had a metric fuckton of, whereas alot of others have easy access to others as well :P
  15. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

The OP seems on a mission to see the swastika over the kremlin. This is the third thread based on a Dunkirk collapse he's started.
  16. Resurgam

    Some questions about Nazi-Soviet relations.

Also, in Second Book Hitler indicates the grand battle royale for the fate of the world would be America v. Germany. At the same time, his racial beliefs and warped view of the US as being "negrofied" and dominated by Jews, reinforced by giddiness over the attack on Pearl Harbor, led him to...
  17. In a freak coincidence, both Stalin and Hitler die during the beginning of Operation Barbarossa

It's an ethnic slur, not a historical fact. Nope. Molotov will be acknowledged as a leader at the same day.
  18. Entrerriano

    Map Thread XX

what did you do to California and Brazil
  19. Goeben Atlantic breakout

Yes. Goeben didn't receive any dry-dock treatment until Brest-Litovsk gained them access to Sevastopol's dd in 1918. Mine damage was repaired using caissons at Constantinople, and not very effectively.
  20. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

That's not what I am saying What I am saying is that the BEF was not the entire British Army or even a majority of it and its loss while terrible would not prevent its massive growth nor would it leave the British Isles defenceless or force the British Government to seek terms.
