  1. Remember the Texas! The United States in World War II (an alternate history)

He got a DSM in World War I on IV Corps staff as part of the planning staff for the St Mihael offensive.
  2. Remember the Texas! The United States in World War II (an alternate history)

it was a bad idea that King seriously pushed but FDR overruled in favor of the Philippines
  3. After Spitfire: what should Supermarine be doing to remain relevant well until 1960s?

Going with a jet-powered fighter design before ww2 ends might be a good start. Even if it is with straight wings, talk a grown-up E.28/29, or a 'Britanized FJ-1'. Granted, this will require the blessing of the Air Ministry.
  4. WI bigger Panama Canal

There was talk of using atomic weapons to build a sea level canal. Dig the hole and remove the dirt in one (series of)explosions. This was pre fallout knowledge, of course. Don’t know how many bombs it would have taken, but the original canal took ten years, this could possibly be done in less...
  5. Remember the Texas! The United States in World War II (an alternate history)

I was thinking that myself. What are BBs going to do in the Atlantic at this period. The US is nowhere ready for an amphibious invasion anywhere in Africa and the KM is basically a lot of U-boats and a bunch of rubber ducks. It is a destroyer war there.

Working on my entry for the MOTF
  7. AHC: Defend the Falklands

It would've take a lots of time, so better work around the clock to do it. C-130s will be supposed to lob the Exocets from tens of kilometers away, not to do it up close and personal.

How important was the Dunkirk evacuation ?

I have no doubts that the loss of more of the BEF would be damaging and put a halt to British offensive capabilities for a few months, but way too many people here are overestimating the likelihood of a peace treaty. Britain wanted Germany out of France, but the latter wanted to stay and...
  9. AHC: The US with a high speed rail system as prolific as in East Asia or western Europe

That's because that nuance doesn't exist. Transporting goods is not a magic spell that makes a system always economically justified, or else there wouldn't have been nearly so many bankrupt railroads and canals in the 19th century. Certainly if you specify particular criteria for what makes a...

  11. The official discussion thread: 1918 - The German Navy sorties one last time -V.IV-

Hi all, Well, and wow! 2+ years of inactivity on this. Didn't realise I had been away this long. I guess an update is due... I am still writing the TL, just taking a different approach & have restarted from the beginning. The old presentation was very calendar orientated (And makes my life...
  12. WI: Bush Appoints John McCain Ambassador to France

It would be very unusual for a major Western European Embassy to go to anyone other than a major donor. Clinton rewarded Admiral Crowe with London reflecting Crowe's shielding Clinton on the soft on defense claims but it is rare.
  13. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

And then what? The Italians advance deep to El Alamein, and then they're stuck, strung out well beyond their supply lines and facing two British divisions dug in and unflankable due to the geographic features in the area with a single armored brigade and an ad-hoc mechanized infantry division...
  14. List of German Chancellors (1949 - 2030)

I was hoping to start a new round. Can't think of someone interesting for 2040 at the moment.
  15. Kennedy Forever

Kentucky Fried Politics: A Colonel Sanders Timeline

Great updates. Sad to see Jack Kemp and Medgar die. Nice to see Grammer put VP Davidson in his place. Also liked seeing Grammer welcome the King of Laos to the White House. I can't believe Michael Moore is running for President! And Aaron Sorkin as well! Also nice to see former President Dinger...
  16. Is it possible to avoid the catastrophic economic and demographic fallout from the USSR collapse

It turns out that the functioning of modern states and modern economies, particularly that of a major power, are awfully complex subjects that can’t be summed up in a series of pithy soundbites. Who’d have thunk?
  17. AHC: Defend the Falklands

Would take too long to do these alterations. Besides, while the C-130's range would be nice to have, they would be siting ducks...
  18. Dunkirk disaster and Spain declares war on Britain.

Balbo never commanded anything larger than a company in WW1 and was a political appointee to run the Air Ministry. Graziani had at least some experience of conflict at Army level in Libya and in Abyssinia Why you think Balbo would have done any better I struggle to understand. Rommel advanced...
  19. Explain the AH Quote

During the Potato Famine, some of the Indian Princes in both Britain and America helped send real and useful (read: not nearly-unusable cornmeal) to Ireland. This helped reduce the amount of immigration to America, making Ireland more populous; the land reforms also allowed for the Irish to...
  20. How important was the Dunkirk evacuation ?

Not the Tiger convoy, the 7th RTR was sent from Liverpool to Egypt on 21 August 1940 after it was reconstructed after action in France at the heart of the invasion scare.
