  1. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

The biggest problem is weight, not just of the weapon itself, but of the round. A reasonable time period example is the Soviet NR-30 since it at least partly offsets the round/minute. The Weapon itself weighed 146 pounds compared to the AN/M3 .50 cal 60-66 pounds (depending sub-variant &...

Um, you're reinforcing my nitpick with the final paragraph which shows empathy as the stronger emotion.
  3. No Scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet (HSF)

The HSF would be ordered scrapped. Most of it is obsolete after Jutland and there is no chance Britain would allow any of the newer ships to be passed on to other navies. You just have to look at what was done with the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Without the scuttling the reputation of the German...

Why are the western allies bombing civilians?

Oh wow, I wouldn't have thought civil war era munitions would have survived that long in a "live" condition!

  9. Why are the western allies bombing civilians?

A few years back a guy in the US managed to accidentally kill himself. He'd dug up a ACW era mortar shell or cannon ball. It was still full of gunpowder but he wanted to use the thing as a door stop. So he either used a hammer and chisel or a power drill trying to just make a hole in it to pour...

  11. AHC: reverse the fates of Eastern and Western Europe
    Threadmarks: M Germany

I got another idea :) I forgot to add the PoD The heavy plough and horse collar are both in Eastern Europe by 600 BC. Thanks to them, Scythians turn from horse riding tribes to sedentary ones and create an urban society. Thanks to this there is more incentive for Greeks to create colonies in...
  12. God Owes Phillip II Twenty Bucks

You are right : the Leaguers wanted a sharing of power between the king and the Etats Généraux that would be reunited permanently. However, it does not necessarily mean the Protestants wanted a strong royal power. In the years 1570s, there were the Malcontents, an alliance of Catholic and...

  14. Can Persia Avoid Islam? If it Does, Can it Remain Zoroastrian?

To be fair, it is not very easy to understand what the hell Khosrow was aiming to do. I would guess that he saw himself as a sort of reverse Alexander. He likely wanted to establish Eranshahr's hegemony over the Ecumene, and break the long strategic stalemate with the Romans. There was plausibly...

Alternate Vienna Congress: Independent Poznan and Prussian Saxony

There is a lot of detail not taken into account. Like how does Russia lose against Polish rebels? How did the Hungarians succeed in overthrowing the Habsburgs? Why does Croatia, a small state with the population equal of Bosnia, invade a largely Islamic and Orthodox Bosnia, let alone fight the...

Why are the western allies bombing civilians?

Am I a bad person for chuckling at that line? More to the topic: technology at the time simply did not allow for the pinpoint accuracy we have with modern munitions, and, ultimately, that was one of the reasons why the civilian death toll was so high.
