The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

Any utility for a 25 to 30mm as the tail guns for a bomber?
  2. A more realistic (IMO) AHC: US Metro/Regional Transit as good as in Europe.

Didn't see this thread when it popped up until you linked it on the HSR thread. For what it's worth, I mostly agree with you. We may have different opinions regarding high speed rail, but I agree that urban/regional rail could be organised a lot better in the USA. There are several examples of...
  3. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

No reason why it couldn't be - so long as you can make the "tent" around the tank big enough to displace the right amount of water you should be able to make any vehicle amphibious to some extent. Tetrach and Valentine were fitted with the screens for testing and there were plans for Cromwell...
  4. Impact on Japan if the Emperor and Imperial monarchy was dismantled following WW2

Pretty much. The Allies had steamrolled every inch of the Reich effectively obliterating their military and demonstrating to much of the population that the Nazis had brought only ruin in their 12 years of rule. Japan surrendered without any combat landings on the primary Home Islands. There...
  5. List of Alternate Monarchs and Aristocratic Lineage

Mary for Denmark would be my guess. Milan unlikely - Francis of Navarre is an option (especially if it happens at the same time as Elizabeth's marriage to the dauphin is going through as Francis is Louis XI's nephew) - gives Francis both French and English support.
  6. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

Actually you'd be surprised to find out the Atari 2600 and the NES use almost the same 8-Bit CPU (MOS Technology 6502) The real difference is everything else. NES RAM is 4KB (2KB Main and 2KB for Video), the 2600 RAM is 128 bytes (not Kilobytes just bytes). NES has a better GPU and Sound Chips...
  7. Boldly Going: A History of an American Space Station

NASA being as it is, is arguably a 'descendent' from the military traditions and while early on it got into the then current "Air Force" mode of thinking for Apollo (Waste anything but Time) it also adopted some of the frugality and ingenuity of the perennial...

A State of Cornhuskers and Riflemen: WI the Hoosier State implemented the Hythe Method before (or during) the American Civil War?

Just had a funny thought after thinking about the thread and you know what would be interesting, guys and gals? In the planned future story as aforementioned in this thread, if feasible, I could have Doctor Gatling be commissioned as a Colonel in the Indiana Legion, and head to Dupont by rail...
  9. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

With limited accuracy and ammo, wouldn’t you have to be lucky to have each fighter kill a single Kamikaze? I think the better solution would be rearming USN fighters with 20mm cannons instead of .50’s.

WI: Russian expansion focused more on Persia

The main problem with this is illustrated with this map. The iranian region is highly mountainous, highly populated, and fairly stable country that more or less keeps popping up with Irans exact modern day borders. The could probably grab a bit more by Turkmenistan's borders and down the...

Challenge the Keep British empire together after World War I

That was actually less to do with Wilson's racism and more about Australia's fear of the rising Yellow Menace to the north; they pulled on the British delegation to denounce that clause. Also, the idea behind what Japan was doing was less "equality for all" and more "we get to be part of the...

AH Challenge: Change the Belgian Revolution into a revolution seeking a democracy in the UK of the Netherlands.

So William I developing his authoritarian tendencies earlier, a more organized liberal opposition and perhaps a heavy economic downturn could lead to a wide Netherlands revolution in which it tries to become a democracy?
  15. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

And from 1944 onwards 20mm makes a horrible mess of most ground vehicles as well!

Challenge the Keep British empire together after World War I

Make sure Churchill has a date with a bullet during the Boer War. Almost everything that went wrong with the empire after 1910 at least tangentially involves him, and a lot of his antics basically amount to him being a petulant jackass (ex. his persistent -- and eventually successful -- attempts...
  17. Rome vs Unified Eastern Mediterranean

Awhile back, I had a somewhat similar discussion going: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/rome-never-goes-east-which-successor-state-triumphs.474932/ This is slightly different. We are going to assume the following: The Roman Republic unifies the Western Mes more or less on...
  18. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

As the main targets for allied fighters were primarily (1) medium bombers and fighter 1939-1942-ish and (2) fighters 1943-45, I'd argue that the best ARMED fighter (leaving aside it's other issues) was the Whirlwind - four Hispanos concentrated in the nose with no dispersion (as far as I'm...
  19. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

A high velocity 30mm firing reliable cannon like an ADEN revolver cannon is what would be required for the best all round performance and was based on the Mauser ww2 MK 108 30mm cannon except with a much higher MV ROF 1200-1700 RPM MV = 790 m/s (2,600 ft/s) Unfortunately the tech of the day...
  20. Could USSR attack Germany during Battle of France?

I disagree, there would have been little to stop to Soviet Army as almost all the German Army was in France and what was in Poland was the bottom of the barrel. Yes the Soviet Army was pretty bad at the time but when you outnumber your enemy 5X or more to one you don't have to be good. Germany...
