  1. UK has advanced solid motors in the 1940's

I'd happily wait for that. IMO, the other problems, including core cavity and top-burning, could easily occupy research until composite propellants become possible (or practical).

WI: Władyslaw Jagielłło converts to Orthodoxy

I suppose the main difference would be that the Orthodox churches simply reject the "first" part of the equation after the 1054 schism. That and the degree of local secular control over the clergy.
  3. Discussion: What if Edmund, Earl of Rutland survives Wakefield?

I'm not sure if he could have necessarily stopped Edward from marrying Elizabeth Woodville, it would certainly be interesting if he tried but I'm of the mind that once Edward made up his mind with her maybe only a divine sign could have stopped him... It's been a while since I've looked into it...

    Native Americans domesticate gomphotheres
    Threadmarks: Cuvieronius

Okay. New title: Native Americans tame Cuvieronius. What happens? As an added bonus, I suppose this doesn't have to mess with the timeline too much. Just have them be domesticated somewhere between 500 BC and 500 AD and the established states and proto-states don't get butterflied away. This...
  5. WI: Władyslaw Jagielłło converts to Orthodoxy

So like how Orthodox Church is in otl, or how the pentarchy was originally envisioned as- autocephalous patriarchs, with the Pope in Rome acknowledged as the first among equals, obviously with massive emphasis on First.
  6. AHC: Socrates becomes a god

A much better world would be in which Socrates, Plato and Aristotle never become prominent and the Ionian school of philosophy becomes the predominant mode of thinking in the Greco-Roman and later, medieval European world (if the Middle Ages are not butterflied away of course)
  7. The New Order: Last Days of Europe - An Axis Victory Cold War Mod for HoIIV

One other candidate for nukes: Australia. Unlike OTL, they have a hostile power nearby, and they may not be satisfied with leaving nuclear issues to the Yanks. Plus, they have the uranium.
  8. Why are the western allies bombing civilians?

Yep. Although the WAllies would likely send P-40s by that point. That, I should hasten to add, would be incredibly lethal in the medium altitude air war fought in the East. Actually just about ALL the early war U.S. designs were pretty much tailor-made for the 10-15,000 foot air war fought on...

The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

I'll bump this question as no one responded. Thinking mostly from an early appearance(1939-41) of that caliber weapon

    WIP Map Thread

Nice to see an independent Dali and Liangguang. Oh, and Sikkim's on the map too; almost nobody ever pays attention to them. I do wonder how Japan kept Taiwan, though.

The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

^^^ Good point on the explosive vs kinetic energy as destructive force.. I'd think, in a perfect world, even with an explosive-dependent projectile, you'd still want as high a rate of fire as practical, and as high a muzzle velocity as well. Mostly to reduce marksmanship requirements - more...
  12. AHC: Longest possible airship age

The noted inventor Dr. Solomon Andrews flew his first Aereon over Perth Amboy (in New Jersey, a town of which he was thrice elected mayor) on 01JUN1863. He offered it's services as a mobile observation platform to Lincoln for use in the American Civil War. Let us assume, as our Jonbar Hinge...

Good to have you back! :)
  14. AHC: Socrates becomes a god

Or, someone gets the importance of conducting controlled experiments of just sticking to passive observation and you get an earlier and proper scientific method.

WI: Władyslaw Jagielłło converts to Orthodoxy

This could itself lead to greater demands, especially from places like France or Germany where the local clergy were aligned more with the authority of the king than the pope. It would be like Gallicanism, but more successful. This could lead to the Church becoming less monolithic and more...

WI: Philip II dies in 1199 and Richard I lives until 1215?

Now that might make richard regret not giving it more of a go with berengaria lol
  17. The 30 mm HE shell. The ideal weapon for use by WW2 Allied fighter planes?

There has been a lot of interesting commentary on the topic of this thread. One thing I'd like to point out is, as far as I know, the 30 mm HE "mine shell" the Germans developed was the only small air to air shell that depended totally on its explosive power to destroy an airplane. In a sense...
