  1. What if no St Nazaire Raid in 1942

It would be sensible. Why? They came up with Chariot and Chariot worked. The British knew all about naval bombardment, surely it would have been considered and rejected.
  2. What if no St Nazaire Raid in 1942

Close is a comparative description. 20,000 yards is very far if you are walking but it's a short enough distance if you are laying a minefield or in a torpedo boat or if you are a torpedo plane.
  3. What if the Greek Revolution failed?

I think that overstates things. To be sure, the Ottoman Empire integrated all sorts of Christian elites, such as the Phanariots. It wasn't just rural bandits that were inclined to rise up in times of stress though. Mercantile and shipping elements from the islands were especially prominent in...
  4. WI no Suez Canal built before 1900?

The Suez Canal, being a sea-level connection, wasn't especially difficult to construct. The only long term barrier to completing it in the second half of the 19th century would be a political one. Without a Suez Canal, world trade would probably become more dependent on rail connections...
  5. Alternate 'Battle of Midway': RN instead of USN, what's the result?

Franklin and Bunker hill (both seriously damaged by Kamikaze) of the 16 Essex class were the only 2 to never see active service again - although repaired and used for some roles like Magic Carpet etc The difference is that Bunker Hill and Franklin were both mission killed as Aircraft Carriers...

    AH discussion: Domino theory correct?

Domino Theory can be a partial explanation in some instances, but as it was applied in Asia often led more to a blind spot in policy making rather than insight. The Viet Minh were fighting for liberation from French colonialism and foreign interference in their country, but Domino Theory put the...
  7. Alternate 'Battle of Midway': RN instead of USN, what's the result?

Would that be RN carriers that where in service during OTL Battle of Midway.
  8. What will happen to the Ottoman Empire if Britain doesn't enter WW1?

They have the same ‘excuse’ they had OTL. They ordered and carried out an attack on Russia in the Black Sea. Whether that’s OTL with the Goeben and Breslau or ATL with the Osman I and Reşadiye it doesn’t make much difference. Are you seriously suggesting the Ottomans (after carrying out the...
  9. What if no St Nazaire Raid in 1942

But battleships do not need to be close to the coast to fire if i am correct.
  10. East first! Europe after a German / CP victory in 1916

This is the first CP victory map that looks good in my opinion.
  11. What if no St Nazaire Raid in 1942

If it worked it would probably inspire more investment in the Atlantic Wall than OTL as they would want to be able to deter battleships. Very risky as any operation bringing battleships near the enemy coast is. Torpedo boats submarines minefields and strike aircraft are a concern.
  12. AHC: Save a notorious flop

Dustin Hoffman and Gilda Radner dodged a bullet there, methinks, though I wonder how the film would have turned out with them in the roles of Popeye and Olive Oyl... Don't forget about Evans' other attempt at a comeback: The Cotton Club. Read @Greg Grant's thread on that in Forgotten Flops...
  13. Alternate Hundred Years War with England-Scotland Personal Union

Well, if Margaret manages to gather the support of the scots (she would be queen since she was a child so plenty of time) and actually form a friendship with her husband (since love is not possible) then she would certainly help her husband to protect her heir. Would Margaret have a good grip on...

What if the Soviet Union was a totalitarian dictatorship with no command economy by 1980?

I assume this is just asking for a Soviet Deng Xiaoping in only so many more words. As has been said my others, it’s a little difficult to pull this off given that the Soviet Union did not have the same benefits for international trade that the Chinese did and they are going to have a much...

    Map Thread XX

Psychically I can't do it myself. It's like the maps where France is in red/pink and England in blue, it screws up my brain. 🤪 But it's true that a purple Japan could be interesting (there's for example this pale and dark beige used for Japan). But tastes and colours are debatable.
  16. Let There be Peace in the Great European Plain: A Story of Teutons and Slavs in 19th Century.

I'm aware. What I can see happening from now is a short lived rebirth of the League of the Three Emperors, which will break down again once another war happens in the Balkans (with independent Bulgarian, Greek and Serbian states, a think another war will happen in about ten years...). In this...

    Nice work! Good luck! Northstar
  18. AH discussion: Domino theory correct?

The "Domino theory" was no scientific theory so it can't be proven right or wrong. It was a view of the world, which said that every government that somehow allied with the USSR was evil and had to be toppled at any cost necessary. Actually most communists in third world countries were very...

I, for one, would love to see more dark or pastel purple Japans in the world.
