  1. Boldly Going: A History of an American Space Station

I read two articles in Analog back in the 80s - one a short story, the other explaining the physics. Given Robert Forward (and Hoyt), took out the patent on the idea in 1986, it must have been Forward who wrote the articles. I'd thought it was a bit earlier, actually.

A Hippie in the House of Mouse (Jim Henson at Disney, 1980)

An interesting idea. Maybe it'll be on the World of Magic where both R. Lee Ermey and Jim Henson discuss the war propaganda films and their overall impact on both the American public and the Disney company, both positive and negative before presenting the parody. I DID IT. I created a WIP logo...
  3. WI: Magnolia League is a Success?

So there have been a couple of threads on this subject (the creation of a Southern Ivy League equivalent) there really hasn't been much in-depth exploration of the idea on here, at least that I've seen. So I've decided to make a list of teams that I feel would be the best fit for this idea of a...
  4. AHC: The US with a high speed rail system as prolific as in East Asia or western Europe

That they don't have anyone living in them is a bonus. There is no one there to sue you and you don't have to make stops in places where no one will board the train. You can just chug on through without slowing down or stopping when you go from LA to SF There is practically zero interest in it...

    The Plantagenet Succession

What about Canute? Christian I had a short-lived son named Canute, I'm sure that name is also compatible with the likes of Erik and Olaf.
  6. Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

This is like POD #1 even before people actually know the term "alternate history." I remember being like 13 and wondering what would happen if Hitler hadn't been rejected from art school.

Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

Naturally. The SA, Ernst Röhm, the Freikorps, I could go on, don’t just “go away” because Hitler isn’t around. Someone else takes his place, for better or worse.
  8. Wi: Cato the Elder as a Hellenophile

Cato the Elder being a man of reason, stoicism, and Roman virtue, I just cannot see him being a Hellenophile.

    Miscellaneous >1900 (Alternate) History Thread

Basically he put his ego about 200 spots above everything else on his priority list, surrounded himself with some questionable people, and knew how to play the press. He changed the solid plan to defend only Bataan to trying to run the Japanese out of Luzon, and we can see for ourselves the...

Christian and...Frederick? Ernst? Frans? Just going off of Christian II's brothers and uncles.
  11. Vietnam, a unwinnable war?

While the ‘72 offensive failed to achieve it’s ultimate goal of destroying the South, the South Vietnamese still permanently lost large swathes of the four northern provinces, which the North Vietnamese were able to keep during the Paris peace accords and later used to stage their successful...
  12. The Plantagenet Succession

Then I would suggest using Danish/Scandinavian names, at least for the boys, as those names are too Austrian for a Danish/English match. The girls’ names are okay though, as is John. Perhaps Erik and Olaf for the other boys?
  13. Vietnam, a unwinnable war?

Its fairly forgotten, but a few years earlier in Korea we actually did unleash a city bombing campaign that was similar to the WW2 missions.
  14. Decembrist Victory Graphic TL

Restored Democratic Party ITTL was, first of all, a populist party, party of the protest and opposition to the "Aristocratic" Republican rule. So, ticket of the Southern Populist Tyler and Nirthern Populist Dorr was logical. Tyler was killed in 1846, Dorr became POTUS, and managed to be...

Map of the Fortnight: Main Discussion Thread

Alright, I will go ahead and extend this round - which will also have the effect of getting things back on the usual schedule. MotF 233 is hereby extended until Monday, April 5.

Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

So I have a second question now: As Hitler is a "regular" citizen now, what happens to germany in the Interwar? Would it still go fascist like otl? Or even a communist revolution (but that may be a bit unlikely) Assuming that ww1 goes the exact same route of course.

Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

Probably even more anti-semitic than OTL if he'd gotten in, and gotten to deal with jewish people even more.
  18. movie “The Poseidon Adventure” as metaphor for 1970s loss of confidence in authority?

Actually, Fredric Jameson, in one of his more coherent observations, argued that OFOTCN reflected 1950s concerns moreso than 1970s ones. That could probably be rephrased as saying it's more beatnik than hippie, IOW more concerned with asserting individuality against conformity than with the...

Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

He probably fights for Austria-Hungary when the war breaks out, and quite possibly still goes through similar experiences, like getting gassed/believing in the “stab in the back” myth, etc. The difference would be post-war, especially if he finds employment in his old profession. Who knows...

    Earliest possible nuclear reactor?

The Chicago pile contained 771,000 pounds of Purest grade Graphite blocks with little Boron content(25 feet by 20 feet high, 45,000 of them), 80,590 pounds of Uranium Oxide (UO2) in 288 tinplated Iron cans and 12,400 pounds of Uranium metal it made 0.5 Watts of power at first test, for $2.7...
