  1. AHQ: was Greece destined to be the cradle of European civilization?

Given its proximity to other Ancient civilizations, was Greece destined to be the craddle of European civilization? It was Greece that "invented" European art, and science and first significant works in European literature were written in Greek, centuries before Latin took off. Question -...
  2. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

When visiting Stalingrad he made a comment on the lines of "What an amazing achievement." Russian responder: "The Russians, to have held out so long?" De Gaulle: "no, the Germans, to have come so far."
  3. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

And they were good quality troops as well with some quality commanders and experienced staff Add to this the attritional losses to the Luftwaffe which they could ill afford The extra 6 months Hitler's gamble in North Africa gained was to close the med for 6 more months and relatively cheaply...

    Ottomans in CP Victory?

I'd highly doubt the Germans would demand vast majority French populated lands. But sure, even then the British could make an offer to get the Germans out of France as much as possible. Leave Occupied Iraq? If the Germans want no British meddling in their Iraqi oil monopoly.

    Ottomans in CP Victory?

Ah I see... probably. The German victories in the West will largely decide what happens in the Middle East. Considering Germany wants secure oil deals they may just ask the British politely to leave Iraq for the Germans to leave Industrial North East France.
  6. WI: No Long Pause

Pacific Islands would have reached population limits earlier; other than that, not much. Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii may have been more united internally. I think the distances were too great for them to have much effect on each other.

Maybe that is 45% of war material? Vladivostok IIRC could only take (through agreement with Japan!) non-war materials (food etc) via Russian Flagged vessels Tanks, aircraft and things that go ka-boom etc had to go via Persia or via the epic Arctic convoy route

Stupid Luck and Happenstance, Thread III

So long as they are doing it far away from the front lines, it should avoid any embarrassment. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if there was an expansion of the French and British embassies too. Friends close etc.

Stupid Luck and Happenstance, Thread III

I think it's more to see how the Chilean forces perform against the Germans.
  10. Prolonging the Futility: A WW2 European TL

I think the western allies losing 250k per major engagement would be overly traumatic. They'd continue the air offensive, but I do understand with Russia wanting to peace out if they are simply used for bodies that the Wallies would have to make bolder decisions. I almost think that they'd...
  11. A European "China"?

Byzantine reconquest of WRE would work too. So would the Frankish one if Carolingian Empire did not split. In that case the period between would be treated like the Three Kingdoms Period is in China. Gauls could also create a Rome equivalent. If the Italian Peninsula remains disunited and Gaul...
  12. [Query] Successful Ottomanization or Turkification of Greece?

Does a Turkified Greece stick with "mainland" Turkey if the empire splits?
  13. [Query] Successful Ottomanization or Turkification of Greece?

So from what I understand, a significant Islamization of Greece (while unlikely given Ottoman attitudes) would lead to an even more significant role for Ottoman Greeks in the empire, at the cost of Anatolian Kurds and Turks? So rather than a situation where the Greeks are awakening a Hellenistic...
  14. [Query] Burmese / Myanmar Yunnan?

I was in another forum discussing a historical Burmese-Chinese war, and one of the posters mentioned that the geography of Yunnan meant there was a geographical divide due to its mountainous terrain that meant it was better connected to Southeast Asia over China proper, and that was why the...
  15. The Sudeten War: History of the World after an Alternate 1938

He 280: Underperformed OTL compared to the 262; politics and development issues took care of the rest. Fw 190: No mention in the story. Probably retired. Rocketry: The Me 163 failed. The V2s weren't much better. Missiles and rocket planes are a long way off, with or without more funding. Do 19...
  16. AHC: Rename a country, that unified from a long-described region

LOL Imagine Germany demanding to only be called Deutschland and the cities München, Köln, Aachen... It even would not be unfounded, given, that some exonyms for Deutschland, are pejorative (Slavic Nemets meaning mute) or pars pro toto using Alemani or Saxon tribe names.

Stupid Luck and Happenstance, Thread III

True, but again, they shouldn't be sending too much that requires a lot of assessment. Maybe Santiago gets a couple more "Cultural Attaches" for a while.
  18. The Undying Empire: A Trebizond Timeline

Upper Mesopotamia seems a region which the Turkmen could take over and it's also where most Turkmen in the region lives today. The region have a mix of irrigated farming and herding, it's dominated by steppes. So the Turkmen could move in displace the Arab herders and set themselves up as...
  19. ARW US gets canada, loyalists stay put

There were three groups of Loyalists that did not have the option of assimilation: the American Indians, notably Mohawks in New York, who had fought for the British; their white allies- people like the Butlers- who were accused of massacring settlers while fighting for the British; the black...

    A European "China"?

As in an almost-continental hegemon, Europe itself being rather small, about equivalent to East Asia, resulting in a relatively ethnically homogeneous country. How could this be done, and what potential states could pull it off? By extension, it would also probably include the Mediterranean...
