  1. WI: Von Braun Killed During WWII And Korolev Dead

I really hate to bump, but why has there been no replies? I want some awesome people to answer my questions!
  2. WI: Von Braun Killed During WWII And Korolev Dead

What if Sergei Korolev died in Siberia and the Von Braun was killed by Allied bombing during World War II? Would the space race still happen? If the space race still happened, who would lead space program development for both sides? (Maybe US Airforce and Chelomi) And how would the rockets and...
  3. WI: The B-52 Crash At Goldsboro Detonates It's 2 Nuclear Bombs

Okay, USSManhattan, I agree with you. But Driftless, I don't think anyone would give damn about the tobacco industry in North Carolina being nuked, because they'd all be thinking: "My god, North Carolina's been nuked!"
  4. WI: The B-52 Crash At Goldsboro Detonates It's 2 Nuclear Bombs

USSManhattan, thanks for that, but I'm a little skeptic on the very little chance of it being mistaken for a Soviet nuclear attack.
  5. WI: The B-52 Crash At Goldsboro Detonates It's 2 Nuclear Bombs

What if the 1961 Goldsboro B-52 Crash had the 2 nuclear bombs it was carrying detonate? How many would die? How would US and world governments react? How would it effect the Cuban missile crisis and the whole cold war? How would nuclear power be viewed today? And generally would super powers...
  6. WI: Khrushchev Is A Democratic Socialist

Well, sorry I was a bit vague, but would've he been chosen after Stalin if he was a democratic socialist and made an alliance with Mikoyan and Zhukov? EDIT: Sorry, meant Zhukhov.
  7. WI: Khrushchev Is A Democratic Socialist

What if Khrushchev was much more anti-Stalinist and democratic socialist? Would he still have been taken down by Brezhnev in 1964? Would Soviet-US relations worsen or get better?
  8. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Also, sorry to get a bit off-topic, but here are the list of Yupiter missions in that AH of mine: Yupiter-1: Launched in 1968, it has a modified version of the Venera/Mars orbiter bus with RTGs, and it's LV is a Proton-K. Supposed to do a Jupiter flyby, but it's 2nd stage cuts off 29 seconds...
  9. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Yeah... so you're essentially saying that it was impossible for the Soviets to launch a Yupiter-1. EDIT: Also, there was a reason I made this thread other then curiosity, basically I have this alternate history idea were Khrushchev ends up being much more anti-Stalinist, and is essentially a...
  10. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Hmm... I see, but the way you said it sounded like you meant making a brand new completely different bus, which was unrelated to Venera/Mars. Also, which "Mars-1" do you mean, do you mean the one without the lander (It was similar to Mars 2 and 3, but with no lander) or "Mars-1M", or Marsnik, as...
  11. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

I really think they would've just used a light-weight version of the Venera/Mars bus to get a Jupiter flyby.
  12. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Oh... so not in the 80's, but how about sometime between 1971-1977, where the space race was over, there was just Salyut, and Voyager had not been launched.
  13. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Oh, derp. Should've known that. Also, was there any chance that they could've launched this "Yupiter program" in the 80's?
  14. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Hmm... Yeah, they we're sure bogged down in the hell that was the N1 development. Also, if they did somehow manage to launch "Yupiter-1" would they have tried putting a Jupiter atmospheric probe, like they put on Galileo? EDIT: e of pi, I feel your pain too.
  15. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Hmm... But I think the Soviets would be to bogged down with trying to get the N1 to fly to try to launch a "Yupiter-1" Jupiter flyby probe. Feel free to correct me on that. EDIT: Did the Soviets have RTGs in the 70's?
  16. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Well, when I said "Orbiter" I mean that it would use the same base as the Mars orbiter spacecraft (Like Mars 1, which was like Mars 2 and 3 except with no lander), but would just flyby Jupiter.
  17. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

Ah, okay, sorry. But also, could a Proton-K launch a Mars orbiter weighted craft on a Jupiter trajectory? (Well, it'd weigh less then a Mars orbiter, because you don't need all that fuel for orbital insertion)
  18. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

So you mean it would essentially be impossible for the Soviets to launch a probe to Jupiter? Even if they made the smallest probe they could make, just comm systems, trajectory corrections propulsion system, and a few instruments and they launched it on a Proton? EDIT: But, how much did the...
  19. WI: Soviets Launch Yupiter Program

What if in the 70's and 80's the USSR launched probes to Jupiter? (Yupiter is Jupiter in transliterated Russian) How would the probes look like? How many of the probes would be successful? (Would it be the triumph like Venera or the string of failures like Mars?) How many probes would be sent...
