  1. When was the Levant and Egypt lost/unconquerable to the Romans/Byzantines?

Keep in mind the Crusaders with foreign backing were relatively close to conquering Egypt on a couple of occasions, so Militarily it is possible (especially during the end of the Fatimids). The issue is holding it for a extended period of time, which should be possible, but requires proper...

What are some cliches in a Central Powers victory TL?

In 1913 it was. 1918 it wasnt

    Vietnam, a unwinnable war?

The shortest that this line could be would be extending the 17th parallel due west from the Gulf of Tonkin until the Thai border, a distance of around 250 km. About the same length as the Korean DMZ. The Korean line needed ~400k men to hold it, 250k of them Americans (using the numbers from...

Also because they were not facing the wrong way. Its a myth. Of the five 15" guns on Singapore, 3 had 360 degree traverse. They did fire on the Japanese, though they didn't do much damage. Partially due to the lack of HE shells for them.
  5. When was the Levant and Egypt lost/unconquerable to the Romans/Byzantines?

I would say immediately -- recall that the Arab invasion was actually the second time that Egypt and Syria had been lost from the Empire, which shows how enormous the discontent was within both of those provinces. The Arabs, in contrast, were generally quite respectful of the local Christians --...

With modern air power that would be easy to stop, not so with what they had in Greece even ITTL. Sadly it would just be another river crossing and then the blitzkrieg rolls onwards.

    WIP Map Thread

Might actually be a good idea to go back and update all of the diamond maps, given how good they were for 2005-8. Did anyone ever make a comprehensive archive for them similar to that one someone did for Bruce's?

A Shift in Priorities - Sequel

I’d definitely be interested in the report’s conclusions!

When was the Levant and Egypt lost/unconquerable to the Romans/Byzantines?

Romaioi is how the Greek-speaking inhabitants of the Empire referred to themselves.

Well it is pretty deep, so that limits your options for bridging it. Basically, you have to build the entire span on one side, then push it across. 27m isn't long per se, but it requires a lot of setup, and a well-defended bridgehead on the opposite shore before you can push it across.

A Hippie in the House of Mouse (Jim Henson at Disney, 1980)

I wasn't think complete decoration change, just a change in lighting and walk arounds.
  12. AHC: Wank the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II

Since I'd like to be able to have them root-fold, is it possible to have them twist backward, akin the F4F's? (A double-fold to reduce height seems like more trouble than it's worth.) Also, in ref potential load issues: wouldn't the wings be unfolded before fuelling & arming, making any excess...

More like Germany getting pushed back into Albania and beyond. Sadly a combination of obsolescent aircraft (Hurricane mk 1) and not enough aircraft ensured that could not ever happen. Of course if we could project that much force so far from home in 1941 we wouldn't be in that mess in the first...

This would mean that the Japanese would perhaps complete their eight-eight fleet plan.
  15. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

I think Tyco is a good buyout target. Tyco was sold to Mattel. The same company also made security systems. Tyco's most famous toy was called the Magna Doodle. This product after Tyco was sold to Mattel was rebranded under the Fisher-Price name and sold as the Doodle Pro. I feel like Gulf &...

Yeh, it can't be done unless you own the sky. Even if you do own the sky it's a very chancy proposition, Of course if you own the sky you're probably not going to get pushed onto the Peloponnese in the first place. What concerns me is someone (Cough Churchill Cough) looking at the map and...
  17. Who could have been the most chaotic, insane and "lost" American president ever if elected?

This is a pre-1900 one but people are already going for it so oh well: Dick Johnson. America's 9th Vice President, the only elected via the 12th amendment mechanism, was a bit of a character. Reputed to have personally killed Indian leader Tecumseh, Johnson was prone to tearing open his clothes...

Can the US keep the Lexington-class battlecruisers?

I think the only option for the USN to keep even a couple of battlecruisers is for them to be laid down much earlier, probably 1916 or 1917. That way, they may have a few by the end of the First World War.
