  1. AHQ: was Greece destined to be the cradle of European civilization?

I explanation I've seen (by Carl Sagan I think) was that there was no single authority to impose state ideology and people exposing unorthodox ideas could flee elsewhere if persecuted. This still however does not explain why there was such a massive flowering of intellectual activity in such a...
  2. Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

I was projecting off the USSRs historical feminisation of teaching and doctoring, resulting in adequate quality cheap professional services. I am assuming a slightly less retarded Soviet Union would use a similar technique on computer programming: cost reduction feminisation.

    Threadmarks: Pandemonium

The Emperor Constantine, it must be said, never took one step backwards. Surrounded by his faithful retinue, the Emperor made his stand; steel in his hand, hate and defiance upon his lips, fighting as brave as a lion. The Ottomans had stormed the walls -- a screaming, turbaned tide who brought...

...regarding the same abuser, they’re not good at moving with any alacrity of speed. Like you would move fairly quickly in a business setting. * women are fully represented in the annals of crime, but specifically on the topic of sexual abuse, you might have to look a little harder to find...
  5. AHQ: was Greece destined to be the cradle of European civilization?

The point is that urbanization allow a higher degree of specialization in the population,, when we mix this writing and the decentralized political structure of city states you get a specialized thinkers, then you mix this with Greek becoming a prestige language, a Lingua Franca and later a...

Software wasn't very good either, nowhere near US or Japanese standards.
  7. Have the Austin Metro be more successful

It probably could have been if British Leyland had received adequate levels of investment from the Government. In 77 - 78 the Metro would be a fair competitor to the Ford Fiesta. By the time it hit the market though it had to face the Golf Gti.
  8. AHQ: was Greece destined to be the cradle of European civilization?

In my opinion, Greek Culture seems more influential because their Culture was spread over a very large area In East, Alexander conquered lands, which even after his death had influenced places from Central Asia to India In West, Roman Empire were great patrons and admirers of Greek culture...

    Vietnam, a unwinnable war?

Without constant resupply, they wouldn't be effective at all, and be little better than bandits. That's something the Strategic Hamlets could deal with, as it did in Malaya
  10. How does the situation in Israel/Palestine play out with no WW2/Holocaust?

Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and Lithuania were all very antisemitic, and Hungary wasn't a fun place either. Zionism was on the rise all across Europe, so you have a much greater pool of settlers. 10% of seven million is still greater then 90% of 600,000....
  11. AHC: Mirrorverse Earth

Disclaimer: This thread is not made to condone, endorse, or justify the opinion and worldviews of The Grayzone as well as other tankies and Assad sympathizers. It is simply made to explore a potential PoD(autocratic and "tyrannical" crypto-fascistic western world vs. the free Eurasian world)...

Q: Would Hitler still be the man we know if he wasn't kicked out of art school?

The Nazi Party *was* Hitler. It was a minor group he turned into a political behemoth. Without Hitler, the Nazis are not the Nazis. They're just a smattering of right wing radicals overshadowed by more successful right wing radicals, overshadowed by a more traditional conservative Prussian right...

Moonlight in a Jar: An Al-Andalus Timeline

The "trick" essentially consisted of having Persian administrators and, crucially, landlords not only remain numerically predominant in Persia and lands east (Khorasan and beyond) but also forming a sizeable contingent over in Baghdad under the Abbasids, ensuring that Persian remains a useful...

  15. Have the Austin Metro be more successful

Until I hovered over the link and saw the car in the preview, I thought this was going to be a thread about wanking the capital of Texas.

2nded It could've done with being released in the mid-70's!

Have the Austin Metro be more successful

2nded I learned to drive in a Metro with the old 4 - speed box . . . . topped out at 40 then took ages to get to 60 from there, while all the time whining like a good un. Using a 5 - speed box sooner would've helped.
  18. AHC: Make the Romansh Switzerland's dominant ethnic group

Based off the wiki article though, it sounds like these were actual Romans who held onto some territory deep in the Alps, and they kept Latin as their language, but it changed over time. While France was conquered by the Franks, a Germanic tribe with it's own Language at the time.
  19. As Dreamers Do: American Magic Redux

It would probably be more cost-effective to either license their IP's to an existing chain or to buy a park that is already built.
