Threadmarks: Chapter 80: The Inauguration of Edmund Sixtus Muskie

On January 20, 1973, Edmund Sixtus Muskie, Democrat from Maine, was inaugurated as the 38th President of the United States. Here are some excerpts from President Muskie's Inaugural Address, in front of a packed Capitol Hill. Chief Justice Warren Burger: It is my duty as Chief Justice of the...

1977 letter to Lizzie II results in a visit by five year old Samantha to the UK. She tours parts of the country. a little six year old British boy holds her and kisses her in front of press photographers.
  3. What if NAZI Germany didn’t build battleships?

Four battleships less is indeed a major saving of material, manpower, shipyard resources etc. It does not directly translate into 100+ U-boats, but it is a good start for the U-boat program, and might turn the winter of 1939/40 ugly for the UK.
  4. What if NAZI Germany didn’t build battleships?

Its not that easy. Germany doesn't have 100 unused slipways to build uboats. You can't just turn off a Bismarck and get uboats. If Germany doesn't build battleships and builds uboats instead Britain will probably build less KGVs and they will get a lot more escort resources from the savings...
  5. Treaty Ports (Ireland) in WW2

Not good to be an understatement, hence why if the ports are kept in U.K. hands something has to give in terms of air defence, though how regularly the Luftwaffe would be hitting Cork is questionable I think. In terms of u boat attacks the simple answer is “what military and commercial ships?”...
  6. Treaty Ports (Ireland) in WW2

But still its an interesting offer had they joined ireland MIGHT get northern ireland back but as a result they probably need to sacrifice a major portion of their armed forces and population fighting in europe and not to mentiom dublin would have been blitzed by the german and the IRA would...

Nice work! An interesting scenario to ponder about. :) I think Saudi Arabia will be in a position somewhat comparable to early 2000's Venezuela here -- that its two profitable industries, oil and tourism, depend heavily on foreign capital and fluctuating demand from the outside world also...
  11. AHC: Save a notorious flop

Okay. There were apparently at least two videos for that song. The first that I watched was set in what was obviously meant to be a gay nightclub, with some rather sexually suggestive goings-on. The second one featured the band playing on a rather generic sort of 1980s video set, with nothing...
  12. Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

This post by @fasquardon sums it up quite well. The USSR would definetly remain a pretty good place to live in compared to the world average. Living standarts would be a lot higher than in it's OTL successor states. The transition from socialism to capitalism was absolutely brutal. Russia took...
  13. Treaty Ports (Ireland) in WW2

The U.K. effectively offered us that in 1940 to try and tempt Ireland into the war (pretty much around the period of Dunkirk from memory), London was going to commit to an official policy of supporting unification, with a formal joint defence treaty among other things. Dev and the cabinet turned...

What if NAZI Germany didn’t build battleships?

If the Germans don't lay down new battleships the British are going to notice, and if they get wind of all those subs being built they will take steps to counter the threat.
  15. Treaty Ports (Ireland) in WW2

What will be the irish people reaction seeing their port getting used by the allies a lot more often and probably smashed to bits by german bomber and most likely as a consequence u boat sinking irish ship (both military and commercial)

  19. What were the biggest tech and weapon mistakes and missed opportunities of Germany in ww2

The early production D series Panthers were a reliability nightmare. But that was a result of changing requirements mid way through the development process and then rushing an unfinished design into production. The A was better and the G was reliable enough within the limitations of its time...
  20. Is the German Empire able to take Moscow and Petrograd in WWI?

So I think this is part of my question: what incentive does Germany have to deal on anything less than total domination at this point? Why is it that the Russians immediately suing for peace wouldn't simply encourage bigger German demands? They've just established supreme confidence in their...
