    AHTL: British Carrier Strike

The cruiser doctrine has played a big part in the choice of escort. Otl the cruisers are part of the raider/economic concept. They were supposed to work with the carriers in the China station but with Italy joining the axis it has given the Royal Navy a chance to test the concept of fast battle...
  2. The Forge of Weyland

Of course, fleet dispositions will be a bit different - for a start, there isn't the concentration around Dunkirk, and the Italians seem a bit less antagonistic
  3. WI Saddam Hussein uses chemical weapons against coalition forces during the Gulf War?

To prevent anyone else from thinking they can play the same card against them further down the line and get away with it, or alternatively, to preempt an Israeli nuclear glassing of Baghdad and Basra and so on.

I was NOT saying who she is not stupid, but who she will surely know better than that...
  5. A Thorn In The Rose: A War Of The Roses TL

Perhaps the Lady is not SO stupid, but IOTL her rasheness gave several propaganda victories to York (like her bloody march towards London). Perhaps she's wise enough to keep herself from doing that, but, as she says "we only have ONE son".

    Miscellaneous <1900 (Alternate) History Thread

What if Alexander was assassinated before freeing the serfs? Perhaps here: On the evening of 5 February 1880 Stephan Khalturin, also from Narodnaya Volya, set off a timed charge under the dining room of the Winter Palace, right in the resting room of the guards a story below, killing 11 people...

AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

Ah, I was hoping to see you here! Would Glorious be present? Personally I think that, if there is to be a 3rd carrier, it will be Furious. She was already based in Britain, unlike her sister in the Mediterranean. However this then impacts hunter-killer ops. Can the Skuas be used as flair...
  8. Let There be Peace in the Great European Plain: A Story of Teutons and Slavs in 19th Century.

Given the in character author's writing I don't think that there will be an independent Poland anytime soon. And that probably means that the German and Russian empires remain pretty strong.
  9. The Forge of Weyland

Right now the Italians will be making every effort to look like innocent little choir boys who'd never dream of making trouble.
  10. Defeated Austria inside German Empire: Kingdom or Archduchy?

I wouldn't worry so much about how 'Königreich Österreich' and sort sound.....not even regarding historical precedents. You must take into account that during 19th C. a big number of Electorates/Prince-Bishropics/Lesser Duchies were merged/upgraded.....and on other occasions it was just the...

AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

I don't think 4 carriers would be available; they were needed for other duties in the Med and Indian Ocean, as well as training. Interesting idea for the follow-up though. It will need extra training for the RAF crews.
  12. AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

They really need three carriers, however if this is a pre-war plan, it could well get Courageous out of harms way. With Ark Royal, Glorious and Courageous they have enough decks. A night strike would remove the issue of defending fighters (as at Taranto), and while interception is always a...
  13. AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

They were going to do that with land based Swordfish with overload tanks - there was a discussion of the mission in War in a Stringbag, they were working up to it through mining operations in the North Sea but it was called off.

How long could Nazi Germany delay its defeat?

Germany would end up in a downright Paraguayan situation by the end of hostilities if they insisted on holding the line against the Western Allies at the Rhine and continued to fight till the end of 1945.
  15. The Forge of Weyland

Gone to the Med along with most of the French fleet from the start of May in case Mussolini has any funny ideas.

How far could industrialisation go without large population surpluses?

The Farmers in the Republic switched very early on to specialized agriculture for the export and manufactory. Products like butter, hemp, madder and tobacco. But this meant that they became totally dependant on grainimports mainly from Poland. There was also not a natural population growth. The...
  17. AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

So in this senario the FAA practices multi carrier night raids against staitionary ships and as the war clouds thicken in early September 1939 gather a force of say 4 carriers ready to struck the German fleet. The first butterfly is that if the carriers are going to strike the Germans they are...
  18. AHQ: Royal Navy carrier strike on Wilhelmshaven, 1939

I do feel a similar raid could have been done (although the damage done would not quiet compare). They would need to develop the mods for the torpedoes was historically done in 1940 but theres no technical reason why that couldn't be done. Torpedo success rate might have been a touch high in...
