  1. AHC: Save a notorious flop

FWIW, I almost never read superhero comics, but I did know the basics of Howard The Duck: rumpled curmudgeon, "thrust into a world he never made" by some sort of cosmic event, lived in Cleveland, and got into weird adventures with a group of young human friends. The one story I can clearly...
  2. WI: Japan don't attack Philippines/Hawaii in 1941: how does US react

We have strayed from the OP question here, and it is really important to note that. Once the JAPANESE started the War, Hitler was in a no win. The U.S. then had the right to send arms and materials to their "co-belligerents" in the war with Japan. The U.S. could "insist" that the arms and...

Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

Without the spending to support themselves(and their worldwide clients) in the Cold War, the USSR could have had a consumer based economy to keep the people happier. The US could afford to do both Guns and Butter, with the top Western economies buying US Bonds to support that kind of deficit...

Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

I believe the they claim that it was better on the USSR than, say, Colombia. The Brazilian middle class lived better than the average Soviet, but they were a fraction of the total population and most lived on poverty in conditions worse than in the USSR.

    The Forge of Weyland

I played my first wargames in a church hall in 1980, they where happy with historicsl stuff but you couldn't play any sort of fantasy or d and d

    The Forge of Weyland

Over here the Church hall is usually the basement or addition.
  7. American Conservatism without Goldwater and Reagan

Oblivious a POD this early would butterfly away all modern people as we know them, but the OP has specifically asked that we disregard that- its very common to use well-known figures in timelines where they wouldn't have existed. That said here are my thoughts: Jack Kemp could be a decent...
  8. What if Robert Taft secured the republican nomination in 1948 and became president?

You might be right but you have to assume Taft would have carried Ohio and Truman won Illinois by only 30,000 votes Taft would have picked up more voted than Dewey in much of the Midwest.
  9. The Forge of Weyland

The Church Hall floor not the Church Floor. The Church Hall is usually the village or parish community centre when the local council is too cheap to provide one from its funds.

As in France is nice grazing space, the khanate is united and survives to the 21st century.
  11. American Conservatism without Goldwater and Reagan

    POD is probably around 1846.
  12. Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

As bad as Putin is, human rights and standards of living in Russia today are vastly better than they ever were in the USSR.

  14. WI: Japan don't attack Philippines/Hawaii in 1941: how does US react

Umm, not sure it does. Under the Cruiser Rules, Neutral (US) vessels carrying arms for UK can be 'stopped and inspected' w/o any declaration of war .. (from Wikipedia "The essence of cruiser rules is that an unarmed vessel should not be attacked without warning. It can be fired on only if it...
  15. Germany goes East in 1914 - French Munitions Production?

... and everyone thought that the assumed ammo stocks would be sufficient, therefore : no need to care for ramping up ammo pruduction considerably surpassing peacetime production. Something out of the french wiki regarding the shell crisis : About a michelin factory in Gravanches: "In mid-1915...
  16. Could the USSR work well enought on its orthodox form to be a pleasant place in modern day?

I am seriously skeptical of the idea that the standards of living in the ex-USSR countries would in any way be better off than today if it was still around. The OTL Soviet economy was stagnant for a decade before entering free fall in its last few years due to the global commodities slump that...

  18. AHC/WI: Make South Vietnam win the Vietnam War with a POD after 1968

I think maintaining the partition would be considered a victory, particularly compared to OTL. Anyways to keep the USA in the game long enough for a change in Chinese leadership (which could potentially stop sending supplies to the NVA and Vietcong) I'd say at the very least avert My Lai. The...

Economic prospects of independent northern Ireland. This is just before the dropping of the gold standard and the oil crisis of the 1970s. So the western world is going to be hit by oil shocks and inflation. The textile sector in Northern Ireland is about to go into decline. Shipbuilding is...

    AHC: Save a notorious flop

At least Howard wasn't a chicken... Werner Herzog would never sleep again: "Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world" ;p
