  1. NoobWI: What if Operation Sealion suceeded?

    Gather stones! Blasphemer! :p
  2. WI: No Lend-Lease to the Soviets

I would have to disagree. The effect of Lend-Lease was enormous on the Soviet ability to make war. Without the infusions of raw materials, especially chemicals necessary to produce explosives, basic transportation, and the massive amounts of the seeming mundane (buttons, long johns, shoes), the...
  3. WI: No Lend-Lease to the Soviets

Without the Red Army, Hitler wins in the West. The entire U.S. Army IOTL was 100 divisions, The Heer had over 200 just on the Eastern Front. The war in Europe WAS the USSR vs. the Reich. Everyone else, including the United States, was secondary; important but not decisive. (Much like the war...
  4. Second Korean War

Going to war with the U.S. in the 1990's wasn't a sound plan. The "best" chance for the North would have been 1977-80. Before then, the U.S. had most of it's combat strength in the Pacific, especially airpower. In the '77-80 period U.S. military was still pretty much in a post-Viet Nam fog...
  5. Atomic Bomb WI

The difficulty is that you had far too many very bright folks working on the bomb. The German error was as much related to what they believed was the only (or at least only doable) enrichment process as with the rather striking error in the equasions. A second problem with the German effort...
  6. Pacific War Redux

Here is 12/10/41. Another very busy day. Enjoy Comments encouraged. December 10, 1941 01:00 hours Local time (PI): PBY out of Cavite locates large Japanese force sailing south from Formosa. Warning transmitted to Cavite. 01:40 hours Local time (PI): Second major Japanese formation found...
  7. WI Japan Tried a Blockship at Pearl Harbor ?

Interesting thread. Sort of confirmed what's been posted here (and my initial impressions).
  8. Japanese Mandate of the Philippines

It would remove the main reason that the Japanese had no choise but try to knock the U.S. out of the Pacific War. The hard part is getting the Germans into a war with Spain, including naval action in the Pacific, before 1900.
  9. Imperial German naval aviation

The overall tech would be very difficult to make work. The air launched torpedoes of the day weren't great, and dropping them in a harbor would have been tricky as hell. On the other hand, it can't be any worse for Imperial Germany in the end game than it turned out IOTL.
  10. WI Japan Tried a Blockship at Pearl Harbor ?

Along with all the other ASB elements, starting with the entire blockship concept? Yes I do.
  11. WI Japan Tried a Blockship at Pearl Harbor ?

Actually I was responding to David. This scenario started out ASB, and is rapidly moving to the ASB Squadron level. This is past 1900 discussion, but the premise here is so far out of line with anything that the IJN ever discussed considered, gamed and planned that it is not possible without...
  12. Super Bismarck

What obsolete battle cruisers? The ones at the bottom of Scapa Flow? German was only allowed six capital ship of 10,000 tons or less. As far as the Med, all the carriers in the world wouldn't have helped the North Africa Campaign (unless you used them as transports). The Reich simply didn't...
  13. WI Japan Tried a Blockship at Pearl Harbor ?

Not to mention the fact that bunker fuel oil isn't the most volitile stuff on the Planet. It's about half a step above asphalt. It can and will burn, but it takes some effort, more than most people believe. Diesel's easier, but the idea that the mythical third raid (didn't we just recently beat...
  14. Super Bismarck

Carriers would have been pretty much useless for the Germans. They require so much support that the Reich would have been forced to build far more surface ships than it did IOTL, enough that none of them would ever have been able to leave port. Even if they did, what possible use would they...
  15. Re-issue of S. M. Stirling books

On his Yahoo group Stirling has made fairly clear that no new ISoT novels (set in that world) are in the works. Dies the Fire is a spin off of the ISoT stories, set in a world left behind when the ISOT happened (interestingly, it is NOT our world, but a very similar one) and those are ...
  16. Pacific War Redux

Oh ya'. One of the great speeches of modern times. The reality is, from the American perspective, this is a total diasaster. The Pacific Fleet has been destroyed, thousands of men are dead, American troops are dying in places that most Americans can't even find on the map. We are seeing the...
  17. Pacific War Redux

The thought of at least part of this version of history actually crossed my mind. Unfortunately (fortunately?) Hitler would have to be far more stable and sensible for it to work
  18. Pacific War Redux

I don't think I've mentioned anything about the DEI yet (if I did it was an error) except in answering a question. Nothing will happen in the DEI before the OTL events.
  19. Pacific War Redux

Here is December 9th. As before actual events are in Italics. Enjoy. Comments encouraged. December 9, 1941: Enterprise task group, augmented by USS Phoenix, USS St. Louis, USS Patterson, USS Henley and USS Blue departs Pearl Harbor before dawn. (Guam) Japanese forces make their amphibious...
  20. WI Japan Tried a Blockship at Pearl Harbor ?

PBY's would, as IOTL not have been effective in finding the Type A mini's. Not at night & Sunrise was around 07:00 on December 7th. You may not be getting more responses since it is clear that you are wedded to this proposal outside of any justification or counter argument. That is certainly...
