  1. Battle of Thermopylae - 600 Spartans

The alternate is generally described as a "goatpath". There is, of course, no way to confirm this today due to changes in the topography of the region. The Hot Gates themselves today are anything but a narrow pass. If the alternate pass had been held more robustly (the legend is that the...
  2. Allied Supertanks: The Anglo-American Tiger Tank Challenge

If you toss out the laundry list of reasons why the U.S. and Commonwealth forces didn't have a super heavy, and would have been hard pressed to use if they had them, the easiest way to get there is the the M-6 with an upgraded engine, probably the 1,200 HP Wright R-1830. By 1944 it would have...
  3. WI Sealion Attempted

Perhaps I miscounted the Divisions? I did check it couple times, but it wouldn't the first time I miscounted/miscalulated when combining independent units in Divisional sized units. In any case, here is my source documentation. (In this case from axishistory.com, but it seems to be a...
  4. Berras Battleship Question: Post WWII Battleships

Hmmm... Fleet carriers sunk by Battleship gunfire: 0 Fleet Carriers Sunk by Battle Cruiser Gunfire: 1 (HMS Glorious) Escort Carriers sunk by Battleship Gunfire: 1 (USS Gambier Bay) Total carriers lost to Battleship/battlecruiser gunfire: 2 (1 CV, 1 CVE) Battleships sunk by carrier aircraft...
  5. Berras Battleship Question: Post WWII Battleships

8" autoloaders are great, but there is a HUGE difference between an 8" bombbardment shell and a 16". It's a geometric progression. 8"/203mm shell (High Capacity) Total weight: 260 pounds Bursting charge: 21.37 pounds 12"/305mm High Capacity) as on USS Alaska, for comparison Total Weight...
  6. Berras Battleship Question: Post WWII Battleships

Your post actually illustrates why the BB didn't survive as a major fleet unit. Even with 10 of the most powerful warships ever made (actually four more than the U.S. & Japan built together), surrounded by escorts, you still need to add a couple carriers to ensure survival. Why not just make it...
  7. WI Sealion Attempted

Loses would, of course, be catastrophic. The German expected to send 27 divisions (less their heavy equipment) by towed river barge (two barges per tug, with the rafts for the 4,000 horses being towed behind some of the barges (Yes, that was the ACTUAL plan. You couldn't make this stuff up!)...
  8. How long could South Vietnam last alone?

Until the North decides to take it.
  9. How's this for revelations?

One thing that the story shows, without ever stating it, is the classic "any sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" theorm. In 3,000 BCE Giants and electrical charges (a la an eel) that can't be killed by a spear is magic. In 2007 CE the Giants find artillery that can...
  10. How's this for revelations?

I love that we are actually discussing the tactical merits of this story. Funniest thing I've read in a while. Guy had to be half in the bag to come up with it.:D
  11. Red Dawn remake!

!! Wolverines! Just won't be the same without the Red Menace.
  12. German Supertanks

Lower gravity would be nice too.
  13. AH Challenge: RN Predominant

The Empire has to survive. Even then its questionable, given the size of the USN post war.
  14. Japanese fleet in Europe

Sorry, I misunderstood your previous post. If the British can hold Malaya (just like if the U.S. can hold Luzon) the whole Japanese gamble comes up snake eyes.
  15. Japanese fleet in Europe

By the time Singapore fell, the Japanese already had mostly taken Borneo and Celebes and had troops on Sumatra. Japanese force were pushing into Burma, and had taken the Philippines except for Bataan/Corrigedor. The IJN was basing heavy ships out of Davro in the Philippines and pretty much owned...
  16. Japanese fleet in Europe

Wow. I didn't even bother to report it.
  17. Where could Germany launch amphibious assault on Canada?

Somehow, I think the United States might invoke the Monroe Doctrine in this case. Even without it, Canada would be a pain in the ass. Too much nothing and what is something is fairly defensible. Not great terrain for offense along the coastlines, and some lovely defensive ground.
  18. Japanese fleet in Europe

I agree up to #6. # 6 doesn't go far enough. # 7. Given the overall situation, was it POSSIBLE to hold Singapore, regardless of cost? The answer here is No. There was no way to hold the island for two or three years & any effort to take it back/ relieve it before 1944 would result in...
  19. Could America have won WW2 if Britain pulled out of the war in June 1940?

As others have stated, without the UK in the war, I can't see the U.S. having a reason to go with the Reich. More importantly, I can't see a reason for anyone in Europe, even Hitler, to declare war on the U.S. Gonna be a bad time to be the Japanese military.
  20. Japanese fleet in Europe

    Hopefully not.
