  1. WI you were Santa Clause in WW2 ???

Green tea and tofu?:confused::eek::eek::eek::eek: No wonder the poor bastard wants cookies so badly! Before I spread the wealth - What year is it?
  2. 1940 - Hitler turns West - Elimination of Britain

Of course the Vikings invaded. Sweyn Forkbeard? Cnut the Great (gotta be REALLY careful spelling that one :D) 1066? Who do you think the Normans were? NorthMan How about the the conquest/occupation of Northumberia, East Anglia, etc in the 700s? Danelaw? English is full of early Norse...
  3. No Vietnam- M14 as standard rifle?

The M-14 was a very good weapon for the troops in Germany facing the Soviets and not bad in Korea. It was too damned heavy for extensive patrolling or LRRP and the Ammo was twice the weight of the 5.56. Without a Vietnam the M-14 would probably have lasted into the 80s and wind up replaced by...
  4. Der Manstein Kommt (Non ASB Seamammal) pre TL discussion

Problem is, in the case of the fighters, they don't NEED a runway. Any flat piece of sod will work as long as it is long enough. The Luftwaffe was being built as rapidly as the Reich could manage, so a few THOUSAND extra aircraft is fairly unlikely.
  5. WI: The Back up plan to counter Yamato

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Bite your tounge!!!! Oh, the horror.... :p
  6. wI: Nazi imposed ceasefire in 1940

Impose a peace on the UK is pretty much impossible. A unilateral ceasefire could be imposed, but that would mean the Wehrmacht withdraws for offensive action including submarine warfare and bombing of the UK (and arguably would require the Heer to abandon any plans for expansion anywhere but...
  7. WI there were Nazi Aircraft Carriers by 1939?

In the case of a single aircraft it would, but in the case of a deck full of fighter and bombers it would make things worse. While you could get the jump off the deck in probably 10-15 meters you would also leave a massive smoke cloud that would be difficult to escape even with a 28 knot advance...
  8. Der Manstein Kommt (Non ASB Seamammal) pre TL discussion

Well, all that should go without saying. :D
  9. Der Manstein Kommt (Non ASB Seamammal) pre TL discussion

True enough. You can get a couple thousand poor souls ashore (out of a couple divisions who leave the harbor) where they will be hunted down by everyone from troops to farmers with farm implements and shotguns.
  10. WI there were Nazi Aircraft Carriers by 1939?

So that would raise max range to 600 miles at economical cruise. What does the effect of Run-up, climb out, form up, say 10 minutes of combat time, and waiting in the landing pattern do? That would trim off at least 1/3 of the range, so we are back to 400 miles, at best. And what was the take...
  11. Der Manstein Kommt (Non ASB Seamammal) pre TL discussion

Since you have been here for over a year, you have had the opportunity to review at least a couple of the Marine Mammal attempts. Have you seen even the slightest hope of ANY of them working? There are staff studies done by professional military officers, efforts by professional historians...
  12. Der Manstein Kommt (Non ASB Seamammal) pre TL discussion

I have to say that any such effort is pointless given the POD and your target date. It is a literal impossibility. It depends on how much derision you can handle from the rest of the Board, especially from the serious WW II buffs. Eventually the T/L will either be ignored by everyone but a...
  13. WI there were Nazi Aircraft Carriers by 1939?

No doubt that the actual range would be less, but the base ranges are also without drop tanks. Once you add the tank(s) the numbers are reasonable, especially in a time persective. The 109 would have about 90 milutes endurance, the Seafire had just under two hours and the Wildcat was around 3 hours.
  14. Noob Question: Why didn't the Japanese just build more merchant shipping?

The Liberty ships were designed to be built as rapidly as possible and to be fast enough for operational needs. They were effectively disposable, wartime use & throw away designs. Allied ocean escorts had a top speed of 16 knots (in the case of the Flower & Castle corvettes) so a 20 knot...
  15. WI there were Nazi Aircraft Carriers by 1939?

The Re-2005 didn't fly until 1943 and was not deck certified. The Re-2001 was NOT a carrier aircraft or even close to one (it also was not operational until mid 1941, even in base form). The features that made it a decent, not great, fighter would have been seriously degraded with the addition...
  16. WI there were Nazi Aircraft Carriers by 1939?

The Bf-109E, which is the version that we are discussing as the 109T conversion until late 1941, had a base range of 410 miles. The Wildcat's base range was 700 miles. Later versions of the 109 had greater range but never approached the range of the F4U or F6F (1000 miles+ in carrier trim). It...
  17. WI: Poison gas is never banned

There are several threads that discuss Chemical Weapons in some detail that may be of interest to you that go into great depth on this question. The short answer, however, is that Chemical Weapons are, in general, not worth the effort. They tend to be far less effective in a combat situation...
  18. Noob Question: Why didn't the Japanese just build more merchant shipping?

The Japanese industrial base couldn't handle the task. It was unable to keep up with wartime losses in WARSHIPS much less merchants. The Liberty Ship, which allowed the U.S. to build merchant hulls fast than the Germans could sink them, wasn't something that the Japanese could do, either in...
  19. The Red Horde doesn't stop at Berlin!

This has been discussed here a number of times. The consensus has always been that Stalin might live to regret it (depending on his location when the weapon detonated), but the Red Army would absolutely regret it. The Red Army was a very powerful ground force, but it was at the end of a very...
