  1. Most likely Cold War turns hot scenario by decade

    Hmmm... Maybe some lesser discussed... 1940's - Berlin Blockade 1950's - 1956 Hungarian Revolt 1960's - K-129/USS Scorpion incidents, Prauge Spring, EC-121 incident 1970's - Indo-Pakistan War 1980's - U.S intervention in Afghanistan, Solidarity suppression in Poland, Flight 007...
  2. F-16 vs Mirage 2000

It isn't all that simple to figure out, since even if you have identical generations of either aircraft in action, they are likely to have different AAM (frex: F-16's could be carrying Sidwinder, Sparrow, AMRAAM, Python, Derby, Matra), radars, ECM, etc. If the Indians select the F-16IN in the...
  3. Military Gear that should have seen service

I don't expect that most of the Forrestals will become displays. They will either be expended in a COMEX and/or turned into a artificial reef. The CVNs will be a bit trickier because of the reactors, although the CGN's made it to razor blade land with no real problem thanks to the...
  4. The Salvation War

The story is a lot of fun. It is the written equivalent of Summer blockbuster movie. Brain into neutral and go for the ride.
  5. Could the USSR Have Defeated Nazi Germany Without the Help of the Western Allies?

Ah, that is the glory of it. The West sits back, watches the "bad guys" destroy each other, and then comes in to "aid in rebuilding".
  6. Could the USSR Have Defeated Nazi Germany Without the Help of the Western Allies?

An excellent point, although I would say that the 300 km figure would more apply to the edge of areas that they had full control, not their national frontiers. The Heer's problems began at the railheads when they had to shift to a horse drawn wagons for a substantial portion of their logistical...
  7. April 1961.Consequences of US Cuba invasion.

:o That's what I get for posting while still half asleep. Move along folks, nothing to see here...
  8. April 1961.Consequences of US Cuba invasion.

Somehow? The IRBM, FROG and IL-28 bombers on the Island were operational, had nuclear warheads, and the Soviet commander on scene had launch authority (at the time, although post crisis there was a lot of revision going both ways on the subject) in the case of an invasion. The U.S. was not...
  9. Military Gear that should have seen service

I'm expecting CVN-78 to be named John F Kennedy. That at least would be continuing a previous name.
  10. WI the Soviet Terra-3 laser crippled or destroyed Challenger?

That could have been REALLY unfortunate.
  11. WI: No Japanese Invasion of China?

The problem is that, in Japan, the tail wagged the dog. Either the IJA or IJN could bring down the government at will, making the military the rulers, not the civilian leadership, the true power in the nation. Beyond that, you had the Kwantung Army, which was the power inside the Army, and was...
  12. WWII challenge: greater US mass surrenders

Not really. If an armored force closed on the beachhead the Allies had several battleships, not to mention a few hundred fighter bombers on call to deal with them. The greatest danger was a large attack on one of the landing forces, a small one, especially at Omaha would have chopped to bits.
  13. 1940 - Hitler turns West - Elimination of Britain

Well, the nice thing about attacking landing craft full of people is that all you have to do is kill the people. The LCM might still be afloat, but if its full of dead, or even better badly wounded, troops when they get home, it doesn't much matter.
  14. WI: No Japanese Invasion of China?

Why? Did Germany defeat a combined French/British/Russian Alliance in 1894 in a naked war off aggression, followed by a defeat of the Ottoman Empire in 1904 resulting in control of the Black Sea and rights to a railway across France, followed by a second, relatively bloodless victory in...
  15. WI: No Japanese Invasion of China?

Well, the FIRST Sino-Japanese War was in 1894. It started a chain of events (Alliance with UK, Japanese-Russian War of 1904 resulting in concessions in Manchuria, entry into WW I resulting in addition of Mainland Asia and Mandates possessions, etc.) that made the 1931 invasion virtually...
  16. 1940 - Hitler turns West - Elimination of Britain

Well, lets see what the RN could bring to the table in late 1941 (I have trimmed off OTL war-time losses) 12 BB (+ two pre-WW I dreadnaughts and a chance of two new construction being rushed into action) 10 CA 17 CL 121 DD 100+ Flower class corvettes (not much of a surface engagement...
  17. What if Germany would of stopped in 1941?

Depends on what you mean by stop. If you are talking dead stop, no more aggressive moves anywhere, withdrawing from Africa (which was a damned stupid place to be in the first place) after the relief of Tobruk in late November of 1941, letting the Italians stand or fall on their own hook, end the...
  18. Military Gear that should have seen service

Well, its one I bit on. :o
  19. 1940 - Hitler turns West - Elimination of Britain

Yea, I got smacked on the hand for this one too. :p
