  1. What if Pakistan nuked India in 1999?

Probably not even a Nuclear Autumn. Insufficient throw weight.
  2. What if Pakistan nuked India in 1999?

India would have responded, with more weapons, and more potent ones at that. India has multi-stage weapons and has had them (including testing) since before the POD, Pakistan does not. As noted, a LOT of people die. Hopefully they "only" die on the sub-Continent. Escalation, considering...
  3. Best navalized military aircraft

She was "commissioned" well before a RN/USN ship would receive her formal commissioning, and well before the standard IJN practice, mainly to allow them to sail her across the Bay under her own power in hopes of avoiding damage by American bombers. She was a good six months from condition to...
  4. List of battles in 1915 (Wikipedia.org 28.8.2015)

    Huh? More explanation please.
  5. Greatest aircraft designer of all time?

Kelly Johnson out of Lockheed. A few highlights: Model 10/12/14 Electra airliner PV-1 Constellation airliner P-38 P-80 P2V U-2 F-104 SR-71 Started out designing twin piston engine airliners (the aircraft that Amelia Earhart was flying was a modified Electra) and ended his...
  6. Plausibility Check: V-1 Flying Bombs used in Anti-Aircraft role

Possible? Yes. Practical? Not really. It is actually slow enough climbing that a fighter escort could intercept it. It took more than five man weeks of effort (350 hours) to construct one V-1 (F-103) so the cost:benefit is terrible. If you use a shrapenel warhead the overwhelming...
  7. Best navalized military aircraft

Terrific little aircraft. However, it was designed from the initial proposal as a carrier strike plan.
  8. No Kiev 1941 - Early Operation Typhoon

Y'all need to calm down in here. Discussion, folks, DISCUSSION. You will sometimes find that both sides of discussion feel the facts support their position, especially in matter that are speculative, such as, well, this entire Board. While there are occasionally trolls who exist purely...
  9. Most Badass Plane of WW2

The difference between the two cargo planes is insane. Almost 100 mph cruising speed and around 1/3 more max load. The B-17 came anywhere close to that and you are looking at an aircraft as fast as the B-29 top end and enough extra lift to not only handle all the bits and pieces that...
  10. Best navalized military aircraft

Eventually is right. Took the FAA to figure out how to get the damned thing on deck. Many, many things have been said about the F4U. Handy on the flight deck and a dream to land on board were never among them.
  11. Best navalized military aircraft

Well, it was BUILT to be a carrier aircraft, literally from the drawing board, long before the first bolt was turned. Hardly a established land based aircraft that was converted.
  12. Which Starting Year Gave Germany the Best shot?

1527. Once the ASB moves them back, they are Golden. i.e. Wasn't going to happen without divine intervention.
  13. Most Badass Plane of WW2

The range of the Japanese Type 99 20mm cannon was 800-1,000 meters. The range of a Browning M-2 .50 cal is ~2,000 meters. 20mm do more damage, heavy MG have more range (and the Japanese Type 99 was one of the weaker 20mm used in WW II, with both a low muzzle velocity (600 mps) and slow rate of...
  14. Most Badass Plane of WW2

The idea of a B-17 with close to double the horsepower is sort of scary. Of course the R-2800 weighed better than twice as much and was dual bank design to boot, and more than a foot longer than the R-1820. Need an entirely new nacelle and cowling design & it would stand out like a sore thumb...
  15. Most Badass Plane of WW2

Positive being that they did get the Bendix chin turret out of the experiment and the decision to stagger the waist gunner positions came from one of the many modifications tried on the series.
  16. Most Badass Plane of WW2

Depends on the definition. Able to do pretty much anything and do it damned near as well as specific type aircraft: Mosquito. People who designed it should have been awarded both the highest civilian honor the UK had and free beer and chips for life. Bring you home when it had no damned...
  17. Longest-running bar room brawl?

    WTF? Locked.
  18. AH. FACE-OFF COMMANDO v RAMBO

Wrong forum. Frivolous beyond words. Locked.
  19. The NOT-so-best looking fighters of all time

But. to be fair, Vought made up for it with the Last Great Dogfighter, the F-8.
  20. Best navalized military aircraft

I would second the P-47. Far from ideal, wing loading is pretty high, as is stall speed, but it is in the same general weight class as both the F6F and F4U. The "Seahorse" must have been a joy to land with the Mustang's long forward fuselage.
