  1. British A39 Tortoise vs American T-28, More Effective?

The A39 has a notable advantage in speed (12 MPH vs. 8 mph), as well in general mobility at 17 tons lower weight with an extra 100 hp on tap and two feet less width (the T-28 can reduce its full width, but only by removing the outer track set, meaning it would require double the number of rail...
  2. French perform much better at Mers-el-Kébir

Play the ball, not the man. This sort of snide comment doesn't help your position.
  3. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

The First Lord of the Admiralty and likely a few other senior officers wind up Danny Dever
  4. If the Confederacy Wins the Civil War, Does the United States Move Its Capital?

REport issues, don't go to insults. Play the ball, not the man.
  5. If the Confederacy Wins the Civil War, Does the United States Move Its Capital?

I have given you WAY too many chances. This is the last straw. You have no one to thank for this besides yourself. Banned.
  6. PC/WI. LVT "Amtrac's" us instead of Sherman DD's at Normandy?

I have to again weigh in in favor of of at least the "amtank" version of the LVT opposed to conventional Shermans, even if landed from LCT. Each LCT had three tanks, by the time the second tank was ready to exit the ramp the enemy could zero in on the stationary LCT with heavy weapons. LVT would...
  7. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

Regarding the question of probability - Is it more probable that: The Kaiser (who had already established a reputation for being fond of the leap/look system) would allow a incident to accelerate out of control. OR The combined states of continental Europe, all of whom have competing...
  8. PC/WI. LVT "Amtrac's" us instead of Sherman DD's at Normandy?

Problem was the tanks sank, generally without any enemy action necessary. They were supposed to swim in from 6,000 yards out, it had, apparently worked very well in calm water. 27 of 32 DD tanks of the 741st Tank Battalion were lost (2 managed to reach the beach, the other three were landed from...
  9. AHC: Resolve Iraq's Issue of Weapon of Mass Destruction in 2003 Without War

When the cease-fire was arranged the Iraqis pulled a fast one on Schwarzkopf. While negotiating the terms of the cease fire, including the "no-fly" rules the Iraqis asked him if they could fly armed helos for transportation and evac. He agreed, provided they did not overfly Coalition forces...
  10. PC/WI. LVT "Amtrac's" us instead of Sherman DD's at Normandy?

There was almost continuous gunfire support. The U.S. lost three destroyers, 2 Greaves class and 1 Sumner class (all to mines) performing gunfire support. The difficulty was, especially at Omaha, that casualties were high enough that shore fire control parties were often made casualties. The...
  11. WI: Black Territory Created in the American West

Who is going to pay for all of the Slaves? Slaves were the most valuable commodity in the U.S. pre-ACW. There is a reason that the Southern landed class (and a good many what we would call "middle class") went to war to preserve slavery. The value of the slaves in the South, in 1860 was...
  12. Super heavy tanks--any way to make them viable?

It looks like the hull can be penetrated at 1,500 meters both front and side at 76.2mm (several sources agree, including the museum where the only TOG II prototype is kept). The Pzgr 39 had 78mm at 1,500. The Turret front is safe, but the hull is not.
  13. AHC: Resolve Iraq's Issue of Weapon of Mass Destruction in 2003 Without War

Easy. Don't agree to the idiotic "can we fly our helicopters?" deal when the Gulf War is ending. Without the helps the dual revolts (southern Arabs and Kurds) succeed and send Saddam to his reward in 1991-2.
  14. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

The proper term that the U.S. should have used was quarantine, which was the accepted term for closing a port or ports within your own country.
  15. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

All the U.S. did was act as a mediator (although the Japanese decided, after the fact, that TR had screwed them over).
  16. PC/WI. LVT "Amtrac's" us instead of Sherman DD's at Normandy?

The LVT(A)-4 (aka: the amtank) was in full production by the time of the invasion. Both versions (the 37mm/3 machine gun and 75mm) could have been used. They were not because the planners decided that the DD Shermans would be a better choice based on testing. Unfortunately the testing had been...
  17. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

A blockade wouldn't crush Germany. It would likely cause a severe economic downturn. Interesting part would be how the Kaiser reacts. Does he pull in his horns or go full out to rebuild the fleet, leading to the same scenario as IOTL?
  18. Better George McGovern Running Mate

McGovern couldn't have won more than 5 states if he had the shade of FDR running as his VP.
  19. Anglo-German War in 1899-1900 (Who Wins?)

British in a walk. The Germans can only get at them via the sea. 26 pre-dred BB vs. 6 pre-deed BB, 3-1 in armored/protected cruiser with the same disparity down the line. RN will crush them, followed by a blockade.
  20. Super heavy tanks--any way to make them viable?

At least the Soviets were going to put a 2,000hp engine in their monster. I do really like the rearward facing turret on the T-42, Sort of makes me wonder if the designers understood the whole turret thing.
