  1. Balance of Power Without the French Revolution?

Yes. Wouldn't be until 1815 at the earliest that the cycle would break and likely not until the 20th century that they become friends.

WI: The Dutch East India Company reaches Korea, and at the same time, the Netherlands, which owns the VOC, immediately colonises the Korean Peninsula

This is the most realistic scenario that I could see out of Dutch/VOC involvement in Korea. Ports in Jeju (or even a colony) and Busan, but not much else. It'd probably require a more successful Netherlands back home with them not getting screwed over in the Anglo-Dutch Wars while also...
  3. AHQ: Balance of Power in Asia if No WW2, or any other major conflict happening

This is the same Japanese government that in OTL when faced with the choice between backing off China or attacking Pearl Harbor they went with the latter. You are overestimating them if you do not believe self-destruction isn't a probable outcome for Japan at this point. The best they can hope...
  4. A Hippie in the House of Mouse (Jim Henson at Disney, 1980)

I think Misery the novel has a good chance of still happening because it was inspired by a run-in between King and & Lennon's murderer Mark Chapman at an autograph signing (IIRC, he even asked it be signed "to my biggest fan").
  5. A 'smarter' NATO cartridge strategy 1950-1980?

Everything you say is why it happened - and that's fine - and at the end of the day 7.62 NATO was......fine and by the time 5.56 NATO replaced it - it was time to change the 7.62 rifles anyway. The 270 was seen by Dr Beeching and his colleagues as the best compromise round given the wartime...
  6. Balance of Power Without the French Revolution?

Are the British and French necessarily going to be on opposite sides, because, well, that was their habit in the second hundred years war, and the Bourbons be like....we didn't bring our navy up to speed for nothin' yall?
  7. No Collectivization in the Soviet Union

Or they actually pay what the grain is worth and crisis averted. The "scissors crisis" only happened because the Communist Party did not want to pay for the grain even remotely what it was worth.

What if Europe stayed primarily united as an empire as China did?

We almost certainly see some kind of scientific revolution and some kind of industrial revolution. What form it takes is very much in the air but to say "constant fights to claim the imperial throne" would be a very major thing (China has had long durations of peace), and "imperial ideology...
  9. What if Europe stayed primarily united as an empire as China did?

Yeah it doesn't hold up. The reason for Europe's success is that the Industiral Revolution put Europe on a level above the rest. In the 1600's the Ottomans, the Persians, the Indian states, Qing China, and Japan were all able to go toe to toe with European powers
  10. What if Europe stayed primarily united as an empire as China did?

It would be a Mediterranean empire, not European Empire

What if Europe stayed primarily united as an empire as China did?

I think that Southeastern China (the part of China that has been the most mercantile and navally focused, and thus has had the largest chunk of the Chinese diaspora) could have a colonial empire, mainly in Maritime Southeast Asia, but possibly in Australasia as well.

Stupid Luck and Happenstance, Thread III

Freddie is being shown as being all things to (almost), all people. The election, being covered in public like this, has probably just sidelined the republican movement in Germany until the 21st Century at the earliest. "Monarchies are undemocratic" "The Kaiser was literally elected to take...

The Bleeding Edge: An Alternate History of NASA

The ideal length of a journey to Mars mission if the orbit match is 9 months. You can test thing on the Moon or Earth Orbit, but that length to get to Mars is going to prevent a Apollo style program in Mars Orbit. Once you sent that first ship , things better be ready. So no flight to just...

  16. Better 20th Century for France?

...less scarred. -----If Alsace-Lorraine is an imperative condition as part of this better century, France can still try for it by avoiding WWI, *as we knew it*. France could adopt a defensive and counter-offensive strategy and not tie itself so tightly to Russia. It could let Russia and...

AHQ: Balance of Power in Asia if No WW2, or any other major conflict happening

Unless Japan goes on suicide mode with European colonies and the US (guaranteed self-destruction), they would at least put effort in conquering China under the KMT government of Wang Jingwei. Maybe the Soviets may come and try to do something in Asia. And that's not even talking about the...
