  1. Flying Fortress over Formosa

I'm not sure how good Japanese fighters would be in the anti-bomber role since they used the much smaller 30 mm bullets. But then at that time our bombers didnt have the improved bombsights so I doubt they would actually hit their target.
  2. Was archery abandoned too soon?

Good discussion. You all know your stuff.
  3. Washington dies in 1755

I suspect another person would have stepped into the shoes Washington wore as leader of the continental army during the American revolution. I dont know if that person would have done better or worse. Remember that war was really a long drawn out affair that the American forces won by merely...
  4. Was archery abandoned too soon?

I'm a big fan of archery and I've always wandered, why was it abandoned so quickly to be replaced by firearms. Certainly the bow and arrow was superior to the early matchstick and even flintlock muskets. Especially when using recurve bows. You can shoot arrows faster and straighter than early...
  5. AH Challenge: Peaceful 20th Century in Europe?

We had the chance... and blew it. In 1915 during WW1. On Christmas day thousands (maybe as much as 75%) of the soldiers fighting in the trenches got out and walked across no mans land to extend the hand of peace. When the generals on both sides heard of it they demanded it stopped and ordered...
  6. JFK Lives, A timeline from 1963 until the Present

I'm confused as to how Vietnam is going to work out. Wasnt Kennedy planning to withdraw US troops?
  7. The Giants of north america

I remember the wrestler Andre the Giant who was something like 7'2" but that was due to a condition called acromegaly. It lead to many physical problems. There was also that 7 ft tall woman who used to be an attraction at Ripley's in San Fransisco but she could barely walk.
  8. A new Great Depression?

Whoops, meant to put this in future history. Could someone please move it?
  9. A new Great Depression?

The great depression of the 1930's had a profound effect on the USA for decades to come. Many people have first hand knowledge of what real poverty (homelessness, hunger) feel like. Because of those experiences our grandparents were VERY cautious with their money and savings. What I'd like to...
  10. WI: An Iranian invasion of Afghanistan?

So, we really made a stupid mistake in not using this as an opportunity to further Iranian-US relations?
  11. WI: An Iranian invasion of Afghanistan?

I had read once that prior to the US lead invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 the Iranians were looking at the possibility of invading Afghanistan and taking out the Taliban. A group which was a side of Islam they wanted to avoid spreading. The Iranians never went far with that plan but lets say...
  12. 9/11esque Targets in Beyond NYC/DC

"we are limited to targets fairly near (i.e. within 200 miles or so) major airports. This in and of itself isn't a big limitation, but it does mean that Mt Rushmore (a very creative suggestion!) and its ilk are out of the question." Small point: Mt. Rushmore is only about 150 miles from...
  13. 9/11esque Targets in Beyond NYC/DC

How about taking out a cities main sewage treatment plant?
  14. 9/11esque Targets in Beyond NYC/DC

That is what I was thinking. It wouldnt kill anyone, nor cause any economic damage but would be nearly impossible to repair and the terrorists could "see" what they did for decades.
  15. WI the NFL creates a minor league system, a la MLB?

Isnt the Canadian Football League something like a minor league NFL? CFL players dont make as much as NFL players do and CFL players are always hoping they can make an NFL team.
  16. No Panama Canal - The Effect on the Canadian and American Interiors

I dont see a big difference. Ships can still pass around South America or goods can be shipped overland by train. By the 20's air travel came along.
  17. WI: A more humanitarian Japanese military in WW2?

I read today that in WW2 that in WW2 Japanese officers told their troops "If your injured - shoot yourself. This way you wont be a burden to others". This is in contrast to American and British forces who had motto's like "nobody left behind". We had battlefield medics braving enemy fire to care...
  18. Brazil, Latin America have bigger role in WWII

No, I dont remember but there is this site with some info: http://www.century-of-flight.freeola.com/Aviation%20history/WW2/involved.htm
  19. CSA secedes in 1820

I dont think it really would be possible without railroads to transport men and supplies around. The distances were just to huge.
  20. How to make Europe's population keep growing

That is true for any countries visitors. One tends to only visit the tourist areas and they might not actually see where the people live. So one might visit London, or Paris, not see a single school, and thus conclude the wrong idea.
