    In the middle ages, how did a duchy get elevated to kingdom status? Was it simply that the Duke (or whoever was in charge) gathered enough power to throw off vassalage and declare himself King? Had himself coronated and vassals pledge loyalty? Would this be recognized by other nations/kings...

    This is my 1st ATL, so be gentle! POD: Abbe Suger does not die in 1151; he does fall ill (perhaps a heart attack), is incapacitated and on his deathbed, but lingers on for a while. Eventually by March 1152 he recovers a bit. It is then that he learns King Louis VII and Eleanor d'Aquitaine...
