  1. WW1 - Ottomans hold the line?

If the Ottoman Empire isn't going to attack, why do they join the Central Powers in the first place?
  2. A Blunted Sickle

19th of May sounds a bit early though. OTL De Geer showed himself to be totally unfit to be a war-time Prime-Minister during the May-Days. ATL that is probably less as the situation doesn't deteriorate as rapidly as OTL. Enough to make the rest of the government doubt his ability but not enough...
  3. Japanese ASW

wether you think the ATL Dutch strategy has worked (I'm not convinced myself really) I think it would still be interesting to see what this leads to. Don't worry, you guys may still rip me to shreds once I actually start writing the TL ;) Until then I need some information regarding...
  4. Japanese ASW

By then the Dutch East Indies will have been overrun though.
  5. Japanese ASW

Which is why the RNN invested heavily in air-to-sea reconnaissance and excellent communications between submarines, planes and HQ and even planes and submarines. What also helps is the geographic dimensions of the Dutch East Indies: a lot of islands, narrow straits. OTL the RNN switched to a...
  6. Japanese ASW

Hmmm good idea. Do you know if the Italians used heavily protected, large convoys or smaller ones? I agree with you. Luckily so did the Royal Netherlands Navy! The submarine arm was able to operate in divisions of 5 boats each. According to the source I mentioned in the OP they were also...
  7. Japanese ASW

That's what a trade embargo does to you! Slightly off-topic I did read a article about a Dutch skipper who sailed on a ship that was leased to a Japanese company. He ended up either sailing to Allied lines or grounding the ship.
  8. Japanese ASW

Oh I (and the OTL RNN) fully agree. Losses on the Allied side will probably be horrendous. The Dutch submarine fleet was 'wolfpack' capable as early as 1931. The periscopeantenna made communication within the division possible. My main source even claims that Dutch tactics were beyond what...
  9. Japanese ASW

That was indeed what OTL Dutch doctrine before 1939 called for :) Basically the idea was that the light cruisers would scout for the submarines which would attack the Japanese invasion fleet in the entrance of the Java Sea in divisional attacks of five submarines each.
  10. Japanese ASW

Let me first say that I'm not aiming to write a Dutch-wank or a TL where the Allies are certain to win the Pacific War in 1942. I want to explore what would/could have happened if the RNN fought the war it had been building, training and preparing for during practically the whole Interbellum...
  11. Japanese ASW

And then add the fact that at a certain point even the U-boat training grounds were not safe anymore
  12. Japanese ASW

According to this source (https://books.google.nl/books?id=L9D3AgAAQBAJ&pg=PA440&lpg=PA440&dq=type+93+sonar&source=bl&ots=EOI9KdwDyQ&sig=WC3F1X2tA94cMWyFZONjKF6V6rY&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjG2PuI8KzLAhXjE5oKHVZYCMwQ6AEIXDAN#v=onepage&q=type%2093%20sonar&f=false) at the start of the war only 20...
  13. Japanese ASW

I'm not convinced yet ;) Any idea how good Japanese ASDIC/SONAR was at the start of the war? That seems to be a trademark of submarine branches at war given the fact 2 out of 3 German submariners died
  14. Japanese ASW

Does that translate in effectiveness against submarines though? How good were those destroyers? For instance I've heard that IJN destroyers only carried 30 depthcharges. From what my preliminary findings tell me the plan was to find the Japanese invasion fleet in the narrow straits around...
  15. Japanese ASW

I'm currently working (mostly musing to be honest) on a timeline where the Netherlands stays the course on it's Jeune École naval doctrine instead of switching to a more navalist approach in the mid-1930s. The Dutch plan was mainly centered around submarines which were supposed to take out the...
  16. A Blunted Sickle

Ah let's hope that the history of this Waterloo isn't as anglicized as the original one was ;)
  17. A Blunted Sickle

Maybe the Lion is spared given the fact it was a Dutch/Belgian momunment and not a Prussian one.
  18. Alternate Royal Dutch Navy .

This is basically OTL until the mid-1930s when Furstner and the navalist cruiser-lobby came in control of the RNN. Read the English summary at the end of this link: http://dare.uva.nl/cgi/arno/show.cgi?fid=228622 It's also the subject of the timeline I'm working on :)
  19. Alternate Royal Dutch Navy .

The problem was not that the Dutch ran out of airfields but that the Japanese easily got a hold of the airfields which made carriers redundant :)
  20. Alternate Royal Dutch Navy .

This. The only drawback of using airfields is, as OTL showed, that they can be captured and used by the enemy.
