Oh, I accept that Iraq was far from being the worst mid-east regime and a lot of what was said about it came with an agenda. I'd still have put it up there in the "Top 10 Orwellian States" league, though! ;)

Wow - some great new stuff added to thios thread. Gives me a really chilling feel as we see the inexorable and inevitable slide of the UK into what we know it has become by the year 1984 in this ATL.

Although 1984 wasn't intended as AH when written, I tend to view it as sort of "AH By Default" now that so much time has passed since OTL's date of 1984.

Indeed - but international politics can make some very strange bedfellows. If the USA and USSR were still at loggerheads, the Soviets might take the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" position...

Perhaps if France had itlsef heavily militarised itself and built up it's defences following WW1 in case of such an occurance? It may have held out longer or - with the help of the allies - never been conquered by Germany in WW2.

I'm presuming a scenario where, somehow, this isn't the case and both exist. Please humour me for the sake of an interesting thread! ;)
