  1. WI Communists qon the 1996 Russian Presidential Elections?

Had the communists won, I very much doubt things would have been that much different. Haven't communists won elections in one or two former-communist nations, anyway?
  2. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Oh, I accept that Iraq was far from being the worst mid-east regime and a lot of what was said about it came with an agenda. I'd still have put it up there in the "Top 10 Orwellian States" league, though! ;)
  3. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Possibly indeed learned "tricks of the trade" from each other, perhaps?
  4. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Although one hopes not too much ... it's interesting to see a world that's a strange, but recognisable shadow of it's original timeline. Similar-but-different, if you see what I mean. ;)
  5. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Hmmm ... possibly on a par in terms of all-pervasive imagary, doubelspeak propaganda, internal repression, state informers everywhere etc. Iraq probably had a better general standard of living for the general population, though - prior to the sanctions from the 1990s onwards. The standard of...
  6. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

I wonder what the Ingsoc regimes' international relations are like with other similar regimes to itself around the globe - such as Saddam's Iraq and North Korea?
  7. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Wow - some great new stuff added to thios thread. Gives me a really chilling feel as we see the inexorable and inevitable slide of the UK into what we know it has become by the year 1984 in this ATL.
  8. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Hope we get to see more of this soon. Haven't been on here for a while, so it was nice to see there was a bit more - but really hope we get further stuff from Will Ritson on this. :)
  9. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Good stuff, Will, and great to see this this thread back! :) Looking forward to more. ;)
  10. Would "1984" be considered an actual alternate history?

Although 1984 wasn't intended as AH when written, I tend to view it as sort of "AH By Default" now that so much time has passed since OTL's date of 1984.
  11. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

I'll "third" that as well! This was a brilliant and fascinating thread. Please, please, please let's have more on this! :)
  12. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Yes, I really hope we get to see more of this intriguing timeline! ;)
  13. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Another thought has occured to me about this thread - what is the explanation for the regime's nuclear bombing of Colchester? Was it perhaps similar to Saddam Hussein's total destruction of the town of Dujail following an asassiantion attempt on him during a visit to the area? Perhaps a...
  14. "Images of 1984" - Stories from Oceania

Still enjoying this - hope there's some updates coming soon! It would eb interesting to learn about the day-to-day functioning of the Ingsoc regime. Are there single-party "elections" to the House Of Commons, for example - with all the Ingsoc candidates being returned to office unpposed with...
  15. What would the Soviet Union's relations with the CSA have been like?

But their shared antogonism towards the USA does make for some interesting issues, doesn't it?
  16. Fall of France

    Thanks!
  17. What would the Soviet Union's relations with the CSA have been like?

Which itself could be intersting - maybe leading to a Soviet-CSA Cuba brisesof some kind? Or more likely a USA-CSA Cuban Missile Crises when the CSA learns of USA plans to station nukes on the island pointed at the CSA?
  18. What would the Soviet Union's relations with the CSA have been like?

Indeed - but international politics can make some very strange bedfellows. If the USA and USSR were still at loggerheads, the Soviets might take the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" position...
  19. Fall of France

Perhaps if France had itlsef heavily militarised itself and built up it's defences following WW1 in case of such an occurance? It may have held out longer or - with the help of the allies - never been conquered by Germany in WW2.
  20. What would the Soviet Union's relations with the CSA have been like?

I'm presuming a scenario where, somehow, this isn't the case and both exist. Please humour me for the sake of an interesting thread! ;)
