  1. What would a Fascist Canada be like?

It was the first thing I thought when I saw the thread title, and I clicked on it to see if someone had made this joke.
  2. The Economics and Politics of a Surviving Empire of Brazil Post-1900

It certainly is a possibility, although it increases the chances of it falling later on.
  3. Map Thread XX

It's a pity the scenario doesn't allow Brazil to colonize China. It would have been called... the HUE Dynasty.
  4. The Economics and Politics of a Surviving Empire of Brazil Post-1900

Hard to predict anything post-1930, but... probably not - general trends would still be the same, until 1930, and that means things may get better, but they won't be exceedingly better. Brazilian economy wasn't exactly prosperous during the Empire, in fact, it was then(especially past the...
  5. Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

    I like the name Valentilda.
  6. A Drop in the Bucket: Brazil and Latin America in the Cold War

Suicidal depression is something that goes down family lines - a friend of my brother committed suicide almost 30 years ago, he had an inherited predisposition to depression(his mother had committed suicide before my brother met the guy).
  7. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

Could happen, because if the 1946 Republic goes on beyond 1964, PSD will either end or become irrelevant(as a single party) within one generation. Becoming factions within UDN and PTB may as well be the best end for the party.
  8. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

https://medium.com/explicando-a-pol%C3%ADtica-de-habita%C3%A7%C3%A3o-da-prefeitura/a-pol%C3%ADtica-de-remo%C3%A7%C3%A3o-de-favelas-no-passado-9297ee02457f - This was an article done published by the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Government, so I assume it's based on official data. Adding the numbers...
  9. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

More money always helps, though(also, most of US help was done through the Alliance for Progress program, so technical assistance was part of it). I would say the directions of their policies would be rather different, and it's quite possible that which one was 'better' would be a matter of...
  10. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

Lacerda actually was a decent governor of Guanabara State - not great, and as some point out, he had US money flowing in to help him(money that wouldn't be available if he lost the election, as the USA wouldn't help a radical PTBista), but he did well enough to still be somewhat fondly...
  11. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

Actually you don't - one not very published fact is the great evictor wasn't Lacerda, but Negrão de Lima, who was from PSD(and whose election in 1965 was one of the leading causes, if not the leading cause of AI-2) - I think(don't have the exact numbers available) around 80% of the slum...
  12. Brazilian WI: Carlos Lacerda doesn't become governor of Guanabara in 1960?

Hahahaha, unfortunately no. Rio de Janeiro's current situation has more to do with the 1970's and 1980's than with the 1960's(although, of course, the changing of the capital didn't help). As for the above-mentioned interview, do you really think Lacerda would retire quietly if he lost the election?
  13. Sir John Valentine Carden survives.

I think not, because of the way the admission/exhaust ports are laid out(and once you start changing things like that, you are designing a new engine).
  14. Could Filinto Müller take power in Brazil?

Brazil starts to borrow money heavily after the 73 Oil Shock, and the nature of the people borrowing changed as well. During the Miracle, the main borrowers were private enterprises taking advantage of low interest rates. After 1973, debt takers are both government-owned companies and the...
  15. Could Filinto Müller take power in Brazil?

Eh, the military government rolled all sixes and got all the internal and external conditions right for an unprecedented economic boom, then, when the external conjecture threatened that boom, decided that gambling, all-or-nothing, was better than facing an economic downturn. If it worked, the...
  16. Could Filinto Müller take power in Brazil?

Most interesting POD on Filinto Müller's death for me isn't one where the plane crash(the 1973 VARIG Orly accident - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varig_Flight_820) doesn't happen, but one that changes the senator who would die in the crash; Müller was on that flight because another senator...
  17. CSA relations with Latin America

Yes. Germans at the very beginning, Italians after(1,500,000 or so Italians, mostly in the 1890-1910 period, although they started coming by 1860); there are other immigrant communities(like Ukrainians and Polish) but those two are the main ones, together with the Portuguese - Japanese...
  18. CSA relations with Latin America

I keep reading the words, but they still don't make any sort of sense to me. - Whether the Empire of Brazil lives longer or not is due to mostly internal factors; the survival or not of the CSA wouldn't have any meaningful effect on this; - Brazil wasn't 'dominating Portugal', neither it was...
  19. Osvaldo Aranha became president of Brazil in 1945?

You have a partial point regarding Yedo Fiúza, although I'd say the conditions of the 1945 election, right after the ousting of Vargas, were somewhat atypical. Agree PCB would elect a few more mayors and representatives. I don't think, though, this will translate into votes for President(or...
