PC: Prussia presses on after Königgrätz

I'm trying to figure out some implications from a counterfactual I've been thinking about. In July 1866, the Prussian army decisively defeated the Austrians (and Saxons) at Königgrätz in Bohemia, sealing the Austro-Prussian War and making a Prussian led Germany all but a certainty. But you...

I'm really not seeing cause and effect here.

China cedes Taiwan to Britain in 1841

I think how Britain received Taiwan in 1841 is more important than the actual cessation of the island. If you have a more traumatic opium war, maybe broadened out of South China, then the Chinese state might be more shaky when confronted with further problems in the 19th century. Really hard...

China cedes Taiwan to Britain in 1841

PoD as significant as British Taiwan in 1841 is going butterfly away a lot of 19th century events, let alone something a full century into the future.

China cedes Taiwan to Britain in 1841

What was the Qing view on Taiwan during the period? Integral part of China? I wonder how developed Chinese nationalism wouldve been at this point (not much is my guess) and how hard it would be to wrest the whole island from the Qing

Second Front in Europe in 1943

After reading Battle of the Atlantic, I'm inclined to agree if the PoD is post-1939. However, if you make the Admiralty stop taking lead paint in their tea (to use a colourful and oft used Sealion rebuttal) in recognising the true threat of the U-boats in the interwar, I think you can get some...

There is no empire in Persia after the Parthians

So you're effectively looking to not have a major power based between the Indus and Mediterranean if I'm understanding you correctly?

There is no empire in Persia after the Parthians

I think the problem is feasibility. The centripetal forces of the era and region are going to be quite hard to overcome, the Iranian plateau is a pretty natural seat for an empire. I don't see a path that doesn't result in one of the Parthian satraps taking up the mantle, or maybe for an...

    Nazi China?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Sino-Japanese_War The results section of the summary is most pertinent. China had more of a revanchist bone to pick with Japan over Taiwan, Port Arthur and control of Korea. The Europeans help a handful of treaty ports.

    Nazi China?

Fascists arent generally inclined to ally with other fascists out of any sense of ideological solidarity. If two neighbouring fascist countries are rivals, and one has humiliated the other multiple times in the span of 40 years, they're not going to get along. Japan was occupying Chinese...

    PC/WI: Perpetual WWI stalemate?

France defeated before the Louisiana Purchase

Have to disagree with that point. The Allies didn't want France at the big boys table at all, but Talleyrand was able to scheme his way to a seat from a very poor starting position. If you are correct, it would mean France was granted a prominent place from the outset, which it most certainly...

WI/PC: Alternate outcomes to the Munich Agreements

Bumping What would the actual war looked like if it was just Germany vs. Czechs, with the French and British washing their hands. I'm inclined to think that there would certainly be a military coup should the French and British make clear theyll fight for Czechoslovakia at Munich. What...

France defeated before the Louisiana Purchase

It would certainly affect how much becomes part of Canada if the Americans are lacking a legal claim to it all.

France defeated before the Louisiana Purchase

Even in the face of British opposition? In this scenario, it seems like Britain would be unburdened of the Napoleonic wars if it were to face down the Americans in something like 1812. And given the outcome of that conflict, I don't think it augurs well for American chances of defeating Britain.
