  1. Map Thread IX

To be honest I've avoided fleshing the scenario out too much because my knowledge of Indian history and politics is minimal; I'd need to do quite a bit of reading before taking a serious shot at an India-centric world.
  2. Map Thread IX

    Ouch. What's wrong with it?
  3. The non-fleshed out alternate scenario ideas thread

^ I haven't really thought of this Persian Empire's history in much detail to be honest. I'm not even sure what religion they'd be (I'd guess either Zoroastrian or Christian, Islam seems likely to be butterflied away). Keep in mind, like OTL Russia, a lot of their empire consists of relatively...
  4. The non-fleshed out alternate scenario ideas thread

^ Since interest has been expressed, I'll post a little follow-up map I made for the map thread: -------- A follow-up to my Rome map, showing the Persian Empire (depicted in pink) in the same world: Also shown is the Japanese Empire (depicted in yellow), which is rather similar to its...
  5. Map Thread IX

A follow-up to my Rome map, showing the Persian Empire (depicted in pink) in the same world: Also shown is the Japanese Empire (depicted in yellow), which is rather similar to its OTL pre-WWII version, like the Lieutvian Empire in the Mediterranean region another non-Indo-Persian power...
  6. The non-fleshed out alternate scenario ideas thread

Thanks! Honestly it's probably just one of those ideas that goes through my head that I probably won't do anything, but I did make a map for the scenario in the map thread (OK if I post a map here?). Copy-pasted from there: It's pretty much running with the Rome = early twentieth century...
  7. Map Thread IX

I decided to go ahead and do a map for a scenario like this. It's pretty much running with the Rome = early twentieth century China analogy, complete with anvilicious Japanese Empire expy. It was just a lark so sorry if it's not very good. Power Blocs Indian states (various): Dark...
  8. The non-fleshed out alternate scenario ideas thread

I have a vague idea I find vaguely amusing for making a Roman-wank timeline where the Roman Empire never falls and maybe is bigger than OTL ... but then subverting it by having this butterfly away the European industrial revolution, so instead of being super-powerful the place eventually falls...
  9. Earliest possible date for a unified earth?

If we're talking about when a unified world would have been technologically feasible, I guess one way of determining that would be to look at ancient empires like Rome and China, figure out the response time of such states (how long it would take a ruler to get word from his minions and back...
  10. What would civilization in the New World look like with 500 extra years?

If you want that my bet is you'd have to hit the entire Old World with something like the super-plague from The Years Of Rice And Salt, or do something along those lines; you'd need to delay the Old World by thousands of years, not hundreds, if you want the New World to be competitive or...
  11. Could North America have been able to sustain a large pre-industrial society?

Assuming a suitable civilization with suitable technology, crop package etc. develops, sure, why not? It's a large and fertile country. I wonder if it would have happened eventually if Old World conquest never intervened. I wonder, with pre-industrial communications/travel would you get a...
  12. Greatest religions that never were

That reminds me of Ursula K. Le Guin's The Telling - it isn't alternate history, but the Telling/Way psuedo-religion in it is roughly Taoism-based IIRC.
  13. Marxism Without Marx

The way I see it Marxism/communism looks very much like a reaction against capitalism and the society it formed in, I bet something like it would probably exist one way or another. It might look different from OTL communism and follow a very different historical trajectory, but I bet you would...
  14. WI: Early food vs. fuel dilemma

You could always propose a much earlier (deep prehistory) POD leading to much smaller world oil reserves, with a butterfly net to prevent this changing human history. Though you might also have to shrink coal and natural gas reserves dramatically or people would switch to natural gas or...
  15. Nuclearf weapons postponed for 2 generations

I'm skeptical this is a good analogy. Maybe I'm projecting too much from a present MAD-influenced viewpoint, but a working atomic bomb has obvious practical (military) value that a better space shuttle doesn't really seem to. I'm skeptical it's likely for research into atomic weapons to be...
  16. Can the electric telegraph be invented before artillery/firearms?

Maybe instead of having an early telegraph have a delayed invention of gunpowder? How long would it be plausible to delay the invention of gunpowder? Could it be plausibly delayed until the industrial revolution and the beginning of modern science?
  17. WI: mutual die-off when Americas are discovered

Not just Europe, the idea is the whole Old World gets ravaged. Europe, Asia, Africa, everywhere except really isolated places. Europe might be hit worst because it's ground zero, but more-or-less everywhere it's reasonable for the diseases to go you get massive death. That's sort of what drew me...
  18. WI: mutual die-off when Americas are discovered

Well, the Black Death was about half that deadly IIRC, so get a couple of really nasty bugs over on the first couple of ships and I'd think that should do it. You could always write it up to a freak superplague if it really strained your suspension of disbelief otherwise.
  19. Is OTL misogynous?

I think the most plausible way to do this might be to change human biology. Maybe go for the "Matter of Seggri" solution and make women naturally outnumber men heavily. Alternately, make women as physically strong or stronger than men. Note though under a lot of those scenarios you might end...
  20. WI: mutual die-off when Americas are discovered

I find it interesting to wonder how civilization would develop in the aftermath. Something like this could change the shape of civilization dramatically.
