    Ask Me About Ancient Egypt

Cuauhtemoc covered it quite well in his reply, but it should be noted that the cultural influence did, to an extent, go both ways. Egyptian religion would influence intellectual and spiritual life in Hellenistic Egypt to a considerable degree, not to mention the influence of Egyptian art on the...

Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

I know the feeling :p Funny story, in my recent Fatimid game I've also started pushing into Ifranjistan, and they can't launch counter-Crusades against me since the Pope somehow ended up as my vassal :D (For the sake of nothing more than humiliation, I've revoked rome and moved his seat to...

"The Realm of Millions of Years": The World of an Atenist Egypt

What Falecius says here: ... Is exactly right. Egypt has traditionally ruled the Levant with a light, almost apathetic touch. ITTL, that has started to change; Akhenaten's campaigns in the Levant were the first indication of this, but by now they are a distant memory to the Canaanites and...

    Ask Me About Ancient Egypt

I'd say it's part right? Iry-Hor is the first Egyptian king (he wouldn't have been called a "pharaoh" at this time) whose name is spelled phonetically rather than with logograms (kings such as "Scorpion" and "Double Falcon" precede him). As far as my research has turned up, he's also the first...

"The Realm of Millions of Years": The World of an Atenist Egypt

Trouble in small town Canaan... Chapter 35 The Lady Has Spoken Sit-β€˜Awet [1] – Egyptian Village near Akshapa (Achshaph), Retjenu Autumn - Year 50 NmP of the Atenist Calendar (1280 BCE) The Aten Temple in the village was small, but not unimpressive. The open courtyard was less...

"The Realm of Millions of Years": The World of an Atenist Egypt

Anything not Aten or Ra is officially suppressed, but local traditions continue with varying levels of interference (as long as they stay monistic rather than backsliding into polytheism). However, Atenism has appropriated the theologies of various preceding cults to better its appeal as both a...

AHC- which religious figure had the biggest impact? And what happens without them?

Abraham probably didn't exist (usual caveat: if he did, it certainly wasn't in a way most would find familiar). If Moses did exist (again, this is highly dubious), he probably didn't have much to do with introducing monotheism. That transformation took place hundreds of years later after...

AHC- which religious figure had the biggest impact? And what happens without them?

I regard Jesus as historical in a lukewarm sort of way - seems more likely he was real than not. Obviously he comes with the standard "Figures in Scripture are more Mythologized than they Appear" disclaimer.

AHC- which religious figure had the biggest impact? And what happens without them?

Probably didn't exist, or at least not even close to as described in scripture. On topic, I'd say it's hard to quantify this... Remove one early figure and all the later ones don't happen, remove one later one and the world is still incomprehensibly different. (Overall, though, I'd say Buddha)

    Ask Me About Ancient Egypt

That's actually a bit tricky to nail down... First off, there are certain contexts in which the Egyptians were totally fine with nudity, but it had some rather classist conditions... It was perfectly fine for a child or a low-class labourer (fishermen, reed cutters, claypit workers -...

    Ask Me About Ancient Egypt

It was once thought that Senet was derived from the Royal Game of Ur (it's believed that their rules were similar), but new evidence suggests that Senet is actually the older of the two.

    Ask Me About Ancient Egypt

It's Delayed Answer Time! :o Yes they did. The most popular board game was senet, which was kind of like an amalgam of Checkers, Backgammon, and Snakes and Ladders (the Egyptians had a version of that last one, too). The goal was for a player to move all their pieces off of the board, jumping...

What if the disease HIV-AIDS never appeared?

I also think the gay rights movement might be helped rather than hindered in a world without HIV/AIDS. Historically, the spectre of that disease in particular has been used by the opposition to scare people away from gay rights, to make LGBT people (in particular gay men and trans women) seem...
