  1. Historical Political Systems Colour Scheme Thread

I'll throw in my 2 cents' worth about colonies. I think that the ideal layer of subtlety would be if you did have different shades for the following pairs: East India Company vs. The Crown takes over India Canada pre-Dominion vs. Dominion of Canada Puppet Kingdom of Hawaii vs. Territory...
  2. Your ATL Life

I actually have a rather direct one. In OTL, I was offered a job as Ralph Nader's assistant scheduler during his 2000 presidential campaign. I turned it down because I decided that Nader wasn't going to do well enough to be a positive force in the campaign. Let's say Nader ends up getting...
  3. How to keep Islam from growing?

Unless you believe in a VERY intrusive God, it is completely possible for a better religion to fail to win recruits -- or for the perfect, ideal religion to completely fail to emerge at all! (There is another theory which states that this has already happened.)
  4. Free City of Washington

I'm pretty sure that the National Mall didn't exist at the time of the Civil War. Until the 1910s, it consisted of swampland, botanical gardens, railroad tracks, and a farmers' market.
  5. Ask me about my alternate world 2

Could you elaborate, or provide some pictures? In our world, there are several different versions of football and rugby, and especially with football, the differences can be quite stark!
  6. Ask me about my alternate world 2

Spray-on cheese is the shortest answer to the question: "what is American food?"
  7. Fictional Towns and Cities creation thread

Traditionally, this sort of thread goes in the Alternate History Books and Media forum. Good idea, though.
  8. Clinton Waits

Giving Bush Arkansas is reasonable. A 5% shift isn't. In Presidential elections, where every popular vote total is within the same 40-60% band, 5% is an absolutely enormous shift. It's the kind of shift that pretty much requires a war, a 3rd-party candidate, or a change in economic...
  9. WI the NFL creates a minor league system, a la MLB?

Perhaps a better time for the POD would be in the 1930s or 1950s, during the two periods where there were movements to abolish college football, on the grounds that it was unrelated to the academic mission. (Ever wonder why large private schools like NYU, Chicago, Georgetown, etc. don't have...
  10. Ask me about my alternate world 2

What happened when people from the Old World first came into contact with the New World? Is the scientific method widely accepted? And seriously, do you have spray-on cheese?
  11. Free City of Washington

Very unlikely. A neutral DC would be of no use to the Union, and would go against the Confederate principle that states are the legitimate level of sovereignty. A Free City of DC would have absolutely no economic purpose, either. A small community might have stayed in Georgetown because of...
  12. Saddam holds off invading Kuwait

It doesn't really change the outcome for Iraq. You'd still be within that window when the USSR/RSFSR/Russia and China are both in favor of using the U.N. Security Council to authorize a USA-led counter-invasion force. And you'd still have G.H.W. Bush as President of the USA, with more or less...
  13. AHC: President Mr. Rogers

If we want to keep Mr. Rogers as the same person he was in OTL, then I can't see him running for president. Mr. Rogers was only political on the narrow band of issues relating to his commitment to children's education, and I can't see him losing focus and still being the same Mr. Rogers we know...
  14. Cooperative Alternate Presidential Timeline

Aristo, this is an excellent idea for a cooperative TL. I think the problem is that the recent fad on AH.com of extremely bare-bones Presidents lists left people a little confused that you wanted to do something more substantial. I don't know very much about George Clinton, unfortunately...
  15. Map Thread VI

Nice-looking map, and the substance is quite plausible. I can imagine which states would be the big legislative battlegrounds in the 1990 elections! Pro-abortion ralliers would have their eyes set on Rhode Island, Michigan, and Missouri; antis would be focusing on Alabama, New Mexico, and Kansas.
  16. Alternate Parition of India

I've wondered about this a lot over the years, and my guess is that the best way to address the Partition is to go earlier and mess with the India-Burma border, the McMahon line (India-East Tibet) and the Durand Line (Pakistan-Afghanistan). For example, Burma is an awkward creation: the Burmese...
  17. WI No Roe

Or, several hundred thousands of more miserable, unproductive citizens, suffering from the permanent emotional scars of knowing that they were not wanted or from the permanent developmental scars of being raised by parents who could not care for them properly. Again, this is not the thread to...
  18. WI No Roe

When Roe was handed down, 4 states had legalized abortion: Washington, New York, Alaska, and Hawaii. Also, about 20 states had restricted abortion, where basically the woman had to subject herself to approval by the hospital's board of ethics, which would determine whether her health was in...
  19. A challenge.

In a variant on the Cold War idea above, if the Soviet Union became very Christian, that would take some of the patriotic shine out of America's unique brand of Christianity. I know that the Communists called religion the Opiate of the masses, but who says opiates are bad? :) The Soviet change...
  20. The Conlang Thread

I would use C and Z instead of Ş and Ś. Diacritic marks are nice when they're necessary, but when you have letters to spare, you should use them. It's easier to teach the language to children and illiterate adults if the letters of the alphabet are easier to tell apart.
