  1. Casting the 1632 Series

That does sound quite delicious, and as we all know, Peter Jackson is destined to direct. :)
  2. TL-191: Filling the Gaps

    *bump of deliciousness*
  3. TL-191: After the End

I'm sure this has been brought up before... I came onto the site earlier today looking for this exact thread! Hurrah, I found it, but I couldn't remember where I left off on reading it and had to wade through quite a lot of well-done maps, questions and feedback before finding the place on the...
  4. The Harry Turtledove Inconsistency Thread

I think Italy was simply allied with Germany and not actually part of the Reich, though I could be mistaken.
  5. TL-191: After the End

"March 1964 onwards—The first cases of what will later be designated as Fleischer’s Syndrome are diagnosed outside of Africa, in Hamburg, Germany. The victims, a sea captain and his family, had been suffering from extensive skin lesions, and all ultimately die due to failures in their respective...
  6. Hitler's War - New Turtledove

I didn't care for that book. It struck me as too implausible and weird. Well-written, I suppose, but that's about all I could say for it.
  7. Without Warning-new from John Birmingham

I read this book a couple months ago. Here's my take. The bad: 1. France meltdown due to an Evil Muslim Conspiracy helped by a bunch of Surrender Monkeys. Yeah, not buying it. Also not buying the UK's reaction to it (blowing up the Chunnel?). 2. Israel plays Happy Fun Nuke Time! Not buying...
  8. John Birmingham - How bad?

I rather enjoyed the "Axis of Time" trilogy and was kept up late for a couple nights with my mind spinning over "Without Warning". Sure, Birmo has his problems, but he's got some original, interesting ideas. Plus I love the image of Stalin bitching about printouts from old Wikipedia articles. :D
  9. TL-191: After the End

They're kind of interesting, but make my brain hurt. ;)
  10. Hitler's War - New Turtledove

SPOILERS AHOY! 1. Yes, at the end 2. Poorly. The USSR jumps them, they get scared and ally with Hitler. 3. They did. They overwhelmed the Royal Navy and Marines through sheer force of numbers and are now eyeballing Morocco.
  11. Alternate US Dollars

Naw, keep Hamilton. He helped to create our economy, after all.
  12. Alternate US Dollars

Kill the dollar bill. It serves no purpose. Kill the pennies and either kill the nickel or mint it from cheaper metal. At present it costs about 7 cents to make a nickel. That just ain't good. Replace the dollar bill with a viable dollar coin, ideally a bi-metalic one, to get attention. Remove...
  13. Hitler's War - New Turtledove

My review Just read the book yesterday. Here's my review from Amazon: Harry Turtledove, dubbed by some as "the master of alternate history" is at it again. This time it's in the book "Hitler's War", a book that's clearly the start of (yet another), alternate history based around World War...
  14. The Muskets of the Legions

I could be wrong, but didn't they actually formulate gunpowder at some point and then not put it to any sort of use? But, yes, let's say some clever dick did develop it and put it to use. Perhaps not muskets (could they make them with their level of iron technology?), but what about, say, a...
  15. Pimping my story

I don't know if it's kosher or not, but I have an alt-history short-story that I published on the Amazon Kindle a bit ago, and I thought I'd plug it. :) It's called "In the Trenches", and you Kindle-havers can download it here...
  16. Why does everyone hate Turtledove?

Lotsa sex! I never had much of a problem with the sex scenes, though they don't do anything for me. My thought on this basically boils down to: he's willing to show lots of very graphic violence, so why not through in a mildly non-graphic sex scene or two? Of course, I write... er...
  17. Hitler's War - New Turtledove

Plenty o' Potential I've thought about the issue of appeasement a couple times. It occured to me that, far from being a cowardly act as it's often portrayed, it might've been quite a smart move on the Brits part. I mean, in 1937/1938 were they really ready for a war with Germany? The Nazi...
  18. President Richard M Nixon, elected in 1961!

Phew, I really messed up on this one... of course he would've been elected in 1960, and this should've been in the After 1900 forum... I'll just slink back under my rock and pretend I never posted this like I did. :o Ah, the dangers of posting while sleep-deprived...
  19. President Richard M Nixon, elected in 1961!

What if Nixon had managed to defeat JFK in 1960? It was a pretty close election, after all. Had he won, how might things have gone differently? Would we have had detente with the Soviets and China somewhat sooner? Would the Cuban Missle Crisis have happened, and if it had, would there have been...
  20. Church Bans Compass

That's so forked up... Thank you! I'm here all week! :D
