  1. Was the non aligned movement hypocritical?

It was hardly as if such an invitation had been provoked by, say a botched invasion, an embargo designed to destroy the Cuban economy and assassination attempts on the Cuban leader. The US is way too smart to do any of those things right? I mean one of them might have pushed the Cubans...
  2. Could the UK be reclaimed after a successful Sealion?

The Greeks did win at Salamis though... So now I'm confused.
  3. The Falcon Cannot Hear: The Second American Civil War 1937-1944

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_O._Davis,_Jr.. Is he the Captain in question?
  4. US conquers Barbary States?

The rowboats were a joke. I was more pointing out that the US navy was nowhere near large enough to be going on frivolous excursions to occupy territory that they would have no hope of keeping should any european power decide to take it. Against the Royal Navy in the Med for example those...
  5. US conquers Barbary States?

Around 1800? Wasn't the US Navy like two row boats and a dinghy at that point? It may have been sufficient to combat the pirates, but to move enough troops over to conquer the area? Also wasn't the army just a loose confederation of state militias as they didn't want to pay for a proper one...
  6. The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

I would think a change in how the (settler) colonies were set up would be a start. Being seen as an indivisible part of (first England then) Britain would help. Perhaps with representation in parliament granted once the colony reached a certain size. That way the populations remain 'British'...
  7. What made Britain able to establish such a huge empire?

I think the lessons learned in Ireland led to the relatively peaceful decolonisation of elsewhere. Also the examples of the 13 colonies and Ireland don't quite fit (while I agree that they were seen more as civil wars by the British rather than de-colonisation) as they are hardly contemporary...
  8. What made Britain able to establish such a huge empire?

Read a book recently that was fairly interesting in this regard; Managing Civil-Military Cooperation: A 24/7 Joint Effort for Stability. http://books.google.nl/books?id=l4PHMTKcJG4C&pg=PA11&lpg=PA7&ots=HYxMAroPTg&focus=viewport&dq=cimic+dutch&hl=nl&output=html_text The book argues that...
  9. What made Britain able to establish such a huge empire?

No it isn't. It's British, and the Americans have been allowed to build the base there on a 50 year lease. Which actually runs out fairly soon. (Though they have the option to extend it)
  10. AHC: French-speaking North America Wank

England wins the 100 years war. The French language takes over in England. Frangleterre takes over North America. Everyone speaks French.
  11. The German war against Russia in WW2 if Britain had been conquered first?

He did have that one idea where he killed himself. Seemed a pretty great one to me. Shame he waited so long though.
  12. What made Britain able to establish such a huge empire?

I seem to recall Eddie Izzard suggesting it had something to do with an ingenious use of Flags. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hYeFcSq7Mxg shown with lego.
  13. Probability of a state creating a Mediterranean girdling empire if not Rome?

Athens with more sensible controls on the powers of the assembly, could have done much better than it did. The problem would be incorporating the poleis into a situation where they were not treated like vassals. If that were achieved (big if) then they have a fair chance. I'd first have...
  14. Can WWII be avoided?

I agree it would be madness for the Japanese to go against all of those powers while they were undistracted but also the need for them too wouldn't be there. Without WW2, Japan taking Indochina wouldn't happen; this means they would still be getting their resources via trade, as there would...
  15. AHC: Black separatist state

So I've had a quick look, and in 1800 the number of slaves in the US was nearly 900,000. Which rose to 1,200,000 by 1810. Then 1,500,000 in 1820. To 2,000,000 in 1830. Between 1800 and 1830 the number of slaves in the British Caribbean went from c.800,000 to c.600,000. So if staggered then...
  16. AHC: Black separatist state

Perhaps the British could invade the southern states, free a huge number of slaves and arm them. Then they could just leave them to wreak havoc. Or Britain decides to allow the Caribbean slave owners to sell their slaves to the Southern states prior to the abolition of slavery. (To offset...
  17. What made Britain able to establish such a huge empire?

I'd say having no land borders with hostile, or potentially hostile, countries really helped. Easier to throw just about everything into the navy when you need a minimal army. Easier to have an empire when you have a navy to protect it.
  18. TLIAD -- Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-2002)

I was under the impression that the Enterprise is always the flagship because of the names awesome history. Edit; I could be wrong, but it being the ship of Archer, Kirk et al and doing so many amazing things seems to give the name a pedigree somewhat unmatched.
  19. Decisive Franco-British in WW2?

Nip Nazi Germany in the bud. When Hitler goes into the Rhineland in '36 have France and Britain declare war. The Germans can't fight back against both, their forces are nowhere near ready. For funsies seperate the Rhineland as a LoN mandate or something. Or give some to The Benelux countries...
  20. AHC - Cornish Independence

Well I think self-identification as Cornish is on the rise, especially amongst school children. So eventually if the trend continues the number of Cornish may reach a majority in the county. Given more time the number that want independence may also become a majority. So I suppose my POD...
