Well I found out for my TL that all things being equal one man and one woman have a 20% chance of pregnancy. If we posit a world where women are very low in number for some reason and a well known and acknowledged need for fast population growth then Polyandry would be the only way to do that...

I think you are right there. I was planning something similar in my first, badly done, TL. Maybe I should try another now I've had some practice over in ASB ? France threads seem to be popular right now.

It seems possible to me. In my old French TL I was going to have Florence set up trading posts in the Carribean. I think a "kingdom of Northern Italy" could have been a player in the New World, at least for awhile.
