  1. DBWI: The Normans win the Battle of Hastings?

I'm sure the Saxons would have rebelled within a few years anyway and English history would march steadily on. Although this butterflies the joke that was the Saxon counter-invasion. I mean, everybody knew they could never get anywhere. All it accomplished was killing a French king and throwing...
  2. Reagan 1976 Cabinet

Really? Good to know. I wasn't aware of the rift there. Bush only became CIA director in January of 1976. While it would be tempting to promote him to a higher position (especially given his foreign policy credentials), it would be preferable for the CIA to have a high-profile guy leading it...
  3. What would you have done as Napoleon I?

This is roleplaying, so it probably doesn't belong in Before 1900. As to the OP: I don't know the first thing about warfare or tactics. So I try to make nice with everybody and try to rule my country as liberally and peacefully as possible.
  4. Reagan 1976 Cabinet

It probably looks like a cross between his OTL 1980 cabinet and Ford's cabinet. Kissinger probably stays at State. I'm assuming Schweiker is VP. (Unless of course your POD is Reagan not making the Schweiker announcement.) Bob Dole could probably get a high profile cabinet slot if he wants one...
  5. Map of the Fortnight: Main thread

Oh. Well, if it's been done before then never mind I guess.
  6. Map of the Fortnight: Main thread

Re-read it. He is saying "make a map of a scenario that would be considered cliched, boring and overdone in an alternate TL." So for example, people in a CSA wins TL speculating about what would have happened if the Texan Revolution of 1894 had succeeded. Or people from a TL where Korea pulled a...
  7. Map of the Fortnight: Main thread

Go with "The Not-French Revolution". I still like "Same Old Same Old" too though. Maybe next round?
  8. Map of the Fortnight: Main thread

Oooooh, I really like this one. I enjoy thinking about what kinds of things AH.commers would discuss in ATLs. I mean, every TL must have its own version of the Unmentionable Seamammal, right?
  9. The Republic of Canada

Probably not. Many of those who died in the defense of Canada were Canadians. Plus, the US troops weren't exactly on their best behavior during the invasion. Maybe if Canada does join the US then historiography will change over the next century or so, but in the 1830s the Canadians will still...
  10. Il Duce's Duel

Someone posted this link in another thread and I thought it would make a cool POD. In 1921, Benito Mussolini challenged an anti-Fascist newspaper editor named Francisco Ciccotti to a duel with swords. Mussolini injured Ciccotti badly enough that he was unable to continue the fight. The man later...
  11. The Republic of Canada

The difference is that Texas hadn't been recently invaded by the US. Canada had. It's only been 20ish years since the War of 1812, so there's still going to be a lot of bad blood between the Canadians and the Americans. They shed blood to prevent themselves from being absorbed by the US, they're...
  12. The Republic of Canada

The US is going to love this. My guess is that they side with the Republic in exchange for their most extreme claims regarding Oregon. Or they could just as easily try to make a deal with the British: Oregon for non-interference. Either way, the Americans are in a position of power on the North...
  13. Victoria II

Yeah, I usually use my national foci to encourage craftsmen on my most populous provinces. But that shouldn't be a requirement to get anywhere. The AIs use their NFs to colonize and are still able to stay ahead of me. If I change my NFs to anything except encourage craftsmen then my economy dies.
  14. Victoria II

I've never been sure how the AI gets their economy going like that to start with. My economy always lags behind everyone else's despite the fact that I usually have 0% taxes on the upper class, 80-100% negative tariffs with my lassiez faire system.
  15. Victoria II

They were all still colonies for me, but I had cores on part of one of the territories. I'll probably take that one back since it's free, but the others aren't worth the infamy. EDIT: Shoot, I forgot, since it is a satellite of the Netherlands, I have to "Free Puppet" on the Netherlands before...
  16. Victoria II

Nope. It might be because I was at war with the UK at the time. That's the other weird thing about this particular game. I had a 12 year head start for colonizing Africa. I got the techs as soon as was allowed and began colonizing in 1871. Nobody else even started until 1883. I thought...
  17. Victoria II

The most irritating thing ever just happened. There must be something wrong with the event that forms the Congo Free State. I was playing as the USA and colonized most of Sub-Saharan Africa. Then some stupid even fired and the Congo Free State formed as a satellite of the Netherlands. I owned...
  18. Victoria II

It's 1867 and Texas still exists? That's weird. It always applies for statehood in my games. In fact, I've only seen it exist that late twice: once when I was playing as them and they were the #3 great power at the end of the game and once when they won a rebellion against the CSA in the 1870s.
  19. DBWI: Ford beats Reagen

Um, GOP loses worse than OTL? I mean, the 1976 election was all about who could do more to distance themselves from the Nixon administration. You don't do that by nominating his Vice President. It took all the charisma Reagan could muster just to make the thing look relatively close. Against...
